A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to Resurrection

I recently caught this quote from the website (here):

We get the same kind of body Christ has, but we do not get it the same way He got His, nor do we get our same physical body back like Christ did. We get a new spiritual body which arises out of the inner man. God gives us a spiritual body! (1 Corinthians 15:44-46). This affirms two different kinds of bodies. Our natural body dies, and we receive a spiritual body. Paul says, “It is raised a spiritual body.”

Jason and I like to ask, “what’s wrong with this paragraph?” questions because the error here is obvious.

So, have at it….what’s the problem here?

Well, that person says in the beginning that we get the “same kind of body Christ has” but then says “we do not get it the same way He got His, nor do we get our same physical body back like Christ did.”

So which is it? we do or we don’t for crying out loud…..This contradicts itself because if we get the same body Christ has and ours is spiritual then Christ must have only resurrected spiritually himself. On the flip side if Christ had a spiritual/physical body then so will ours be……..Not getting it the same way has nothing to do on the fact that we get it the same lol….if that were even true, which makes no sense to me anyways. He claims we get the same body but not the same way lol hogwash…..first off who cares HOW we get it as long as we get it, second of all what he is really saying is that we get the same body of Christ and at the same time we don’t get the same body of Christ….logic fail

Whats worse though is this writer claiming that Christ both resurrected SPIRITUALLY as if He was actually spiritually dead and physically. Christ did not need to resurrect in a physical body to let the Apostles know he did his job….its always baffled me on how Hyper Preterism can account not only for Christ physical resurrection but also Christ physical death.

I went back and read Curtis’ article. Interestingly, here are some of his first comments made against the Christian view:

“Have you ever thought about how the Lord will put all those decayed bodies back together. Will He re-gather and reassemble all the scattered atoms and molecules which composed individual bodies at the time of death? After death, various body particles return to dust, reenter the food chain, get assimilated into plants, are eaten by animals, and digested into countless other human bodies. At the resurrection, who gets which atoms and molecules back? As you can see, it can get quite complicated. Another thing that bothered me was why does God raise our dead decayed bodies, put them all back together just to change them into immortal spiritual bodies?”

So basically, he begins to criticize the doctrine because of a puny view of God.

It isn’t irrational. He just doesn’t think God can pull it off. Sad.

  Same thought Jason. The hyper-preterist will make fun of our future resurrected body as if its some kind of joke. All they are doing is making fun of God when they do that.

Curtis says, “Paul says, ‘It is raised a spiritual body.’”

What is the “it” here? The natural body. Hence, Paul T’s great question: “If there are two (2) bodies, how does the mortal put on immortality?”

Curtis’ view cannot make sense of this statement from Paul either: What you sow does not come to life unless it dies…(15.36)

The “it” that comes to “life” is the same “it” that “dies”. There are not two different bodies in view, but one body that is transformed.

As for God not being able to “do it”, that’s a rationalist argument based on skepticism. The same one that says he could not have made the moon in a blink, or a man in a moment. It’s incomprehensible to them. And, so, instead having the propositions that state: your body will be raised, and your body will decay, or in some cases be scattered in ashes or at sea, or eaten by lions, and with these attempt to solve the problem through systematic reasoning, theology and the like, they dismiss it altogether as, what did Bondar call it, a “santa claus fairy tale.” Rather, biblical theologians have attempted to reconcile these two seemingly impossible ideas (eaten by lions, raised on the last day) by using terms such as “identity”, “continuity”, “form”, “substance”, “indissoluable unity” “form and image” “self-same body” that is rooted, ultimately, in the mind of the God who knitted you together in the first place and knew you (all of you, body and soul) from eternity BEFORE you even existed, and who also formed Adam from dirt. Dirt! Thus, THIS God, who from eternity has known those who are his, is not at all thwarted from raising you in the form and identity that he has chosen for you from eternity – your self same body, the one that in union with soul, became who you are.

Now, our opponents will ask “how” and “with what body?” How CAN God do this? It’s impossible. What about those bodies buried at sea? “And the sea gave up the dead”. This is God’s creation, folks, and he understands it in perfect knowledge, far beyond the puny minds of Einstein and Hawking. Mere child’s play. But, when we reply, “we can’t answer how. Paul called it a mystery, we are then told, “see, they can’t answer.” Well, right. I cannot answer what God has not revealed, nor will I presume to. I can only say with the Lord, all those who the father has given to him will be raised on the last day, bodily. Tell it to duh judge.

Sam and all… I was watching a documentary the other day and basically it was all about the skeptical view of Christianity. While watching it I couldn’t help but think about how hyper-preterism – back in the day – was so proud of itself for answering the skeptic on the time statements. Although they truly believe they have answered the skeptics on that point, what I didn’t realize at the time, but know better now, is they have truly messed up the basics and root of our faith in the process.

Besides that, in the long run they haven’t convinced the skeptics at all!

Sadly though, in the process of trying to outwit the skeptics, they haven’t fallen prey to more of the skeptics arguments. Falling farther and farther away from the true faith.

Yet Christ was raised in HIS physical body.

We don’t get raised in OUR physical body.

“nor do we get our same physical body back like Christ did.”

????? (I don’t know what to say)

So Jesus Christ was raised in HIS physical body, and although we don’t get IT the same way He did, and we don’t get our same physical body “like Christ did”, yet we “get the same kind of body Christ has.”

1) The phrase “arises out of our inner man” is troubling – not sure what Dave has in mind. 2) I like N. T. Wright’s translation: there are both a natural body and a spiritual body; both are ‘bodies’, not immaterial spirits. The difference is not in the material from which they are made but what empowers each: the natural body is powered by the human spirit, the spritual body (no less physical) is powered by the Holy Spirit.
