At the beginning of the year, the elders at my church began a series in Genesis. This past Sunday we finished verses 1-8 of chapter 6 and are now heading into the flood story. I don’t remember why it came up, but as i was discussing this chapter with some brothers Sunday afternoon, i had mentioned that there is a large chiasm in the flood story. I thought i would take a moment in highlighting this chiasm for them and anyone else interested. Some of you may be thinking, “ok..cool. But what exactly is a chiasm?” Glad you asked. ( : According to my trusty Pocket Dictionary for the Study of New Testament Greek, a chiasm is defined as follows: n. A literary device in which words, clauses or themes are laid out and then repeated but in inverted order. This creates an a-b-b-a pattern, or a “crossing” effect like the letter “X” (χιασμος, “a making of the letter χ”). Also called inverted parallelism. [p.29] Some theologians, like James Jordan, would contend with that last sentence by arguing that a “Chiasm differs from ‘inverted parallelism’ by having a central pivot-point that in some way is the most important aspect of the structure. Inverted parallelism, consisting of ABBA, may not have such a central point (unless BB is also a pivot or the more important aspect of the overall section).” [1] Regardless of how one should classify an inverted parallelism, both definitions would fit with what i believe we find in the flood story. ...

That activity notifier in the upper right-hand corner of Facebook can be a blessing and a curse. haha. I don’t randomly visit “Full Preterist” pages on FB anymore and so the only way i know if a battle involving my name is going on (which seems to be common nowadays) is if a friend comments somewhere and i happen to be online and notice the update. Looks like Jeff Vaughn has decided to pick another fight with Sam, after Sam linked to my testimony, Why I Left HyperPreterism. Jeff says: Neither you nor Jason ever got Covenant Creation right. Are you still telling people that we believe Gen. 1 occurred at Sinai? It was very tempting to join the group and go at it with Jeff, who seems to have a terrible memory or is intentionally deceitful, but i had to resist. I have learned a thousand times over that Jeff is always right and we are always wrong. Even when he admits he is wrong, he’ll backtrack once he thinks people have forgotten about it. There is no sense in wasting time with such a person. However, i would like to set the record straight for those that visit here and are witnessing that fiasco on FB. In that testimony, i criticized Covenant Creationism as erroneously teaching that “Genesis 1 is no longer about creation. It’s about the formation of Israel as a nation.” This was the remark that led Jeff to say that i have never understood Covenant Creationism. The fact ...

Song by Josh Garrels from the album Love & War & The Sea In Between. Free Download. Had a dream I was alone A vast expanse of complete unknown Sea of glass so clear it shown, Like gold Then a voice like thunder clapped, As a dead man I collapsed I am the first, I am the last, Now rise my son Then behold ten thousand kings, And every creature worshipping Every eye was on one thing, One man He’s like a lion like a lamb, As though slain he holds the plan To make war and peace with man, And reign on earth Holy, Holy, is the One, Who was and is, and is to come In a robe as red as blood, He comes forth Ride like lightning in the sky, On a war horse he draws nigh, The same one we crucified, Will return again Video by Evan Mann Story Behind Video: My wife managed a homeless shelter, and along with it, a modest food bank. One day someone arrived with multiple boxes of shaving cream, all different brands, to donate to the shelter. This person was a family member of a man who suffered with alzheimer’s disease and had recently passed away. Apparently this man had purchased a can of shaving cream every time he went to the store, thinking he had run out. After nearly a decade, there existed a stockpile large enough to sustain a beardless army of grown men; a surplus too grand ...

I was informed today about a Facebook conversation centering on my recent hyperpreterist book burning video. Apparently, the “Dr” didn’t like it. …I can’t believe this. I think Jason Bradfield has truly lost his mind… …The hypocrisy of these “former” HP’s is mind boggling. What they’ve all done is nothing more than simply cave in to those who have “gone before” because they want “something else” from the evangelical/reformed community. Mostly acceptance from them and approval…. But this knee jerk kind of a stunt by Bradfield is really not something I thought he would ever do. I don’t agree with everything that Preston and King wrote (some of the books he burned), but there are sitll many good exegetical facts contained in those books. If hes consistent, Bradfield will start burning other books as well. Will he make it habit now and burn other forms of theological expression that he disagrees with? See how emotional he is by this act? And then completely taking Acts 19:19 (this is what his new hermeneutic has taught him to do, evidently. i don’t think the “reformed” would approve), out of its context and applying it to HP!!! Huh? So, HP’s and their writings are now equal to those who practice magic and witchcraft, I guess. Very poor, poor form…. …Sam…. Give up, brother! You’ve made a wrong choice by apostasizing from the teachings of Christ and the apostles and jumped onto a ship that has been sinking for the last 1800 + years. ...

When defending presuppositional apologetics, someone almost always appeals to Acts 17 to argue that Paul would not have started with the Bible when addressing pagans who did not accept the testimony of Scripture. “You have to work them up to that”, so they argue. One individual (he whom we shall not name) even went so far as to make such an argument from Acts 17 under the label of “Historic Presuppositionalism”. He claimed that “Scripture is for the initiate.” He not only fails to understand Presuppositionalism, but fails to understand just what exactly Paul was doing at the Areopagus. I have entertained the thought of writing a response off and on over the years, but usually get caught up in something else and forget about it. Well, today i stumbled upon a great video from Voddie Baucham who does an excellent job of addressing whether or not Paul was trying to “adapt” to the Athenian culture. I don’t think there is much else i can add to this, so i’ll leave it at this:

One of my passions is to help equip Christians to be on the offensive with the faith; instead of cowering to the militant atheists and whimpering in a corner, thinking that they are not “intellectual” enough to battle. Many Christians fail to evangelize out of fear. They are afraid that they are not ‘smart’ enough, or can’t ‘debate’ well, so on and so on. And many apologetic methods encourage this fear, because they leave the Christian with thinking that they have to become a PhD in this or that subject in order to be effective. Apologetics does not need to be this hard. Once truly understood, it is actually quite easy. The only real ‘hard’ part about it is that it may require you, not them, to think differently about the nature of God and how this whole redemptive plan works. The good folks over at Crown Rights Media have provided this recorded lecture that i pray will encourage and embolden you to get on the offense; for how then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? (Ro 10.14 ESV)

After spending a great weekend with some saints down in Florida, i have been *indirectly* challenged to redeem my time for things more important and productive than arguing back and forth with hyperpreterists. As i drove back up to TN, all i could think about was what a shame it would be for me to kick the bucket soon, stand before the throne of Christ, and have nothing but a bunch of internet rants with confused hyperpreterists to present at his feet. There are so much more important things to be done and bigger giants to slay. Hyperpreterism has not even proven its theory to begin with and the only people it has any relevance for are the half-dozen restorationists running around on a few ning sites…so why bother? As Gary DeMar once noted, “Let the FPs battle among themselves, and when they come up with a unified FP paradigm, then it will be time to respond.” The middle part of that quote will NEVER happen. I’m done trying to nail jello to the wall. So, to ‘officially’ mark this phase of my life, i’ve emulated some old saints in Ephesus. ( :

…millions of Christians from across the globe will put all their differences aside and proclaim, in unison, to the rest of the world, the undisputed fact that full preterism is false and a slippery slope to damnable heresy. You can mock, scream, insult, spit, whatever you want…but today the Israel of God will testify against you. Yahweh has not left you without witness. Happy ‘Hyperpreterism Is False’ Day! Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come ...

Stumbled upon a website today called Living the Question: about a realized Kingdom, completed Salvation and covenant Eschatology. Browsed around a bit. Typical hyperpreterist nonsense with the even more nonsensical covenant creationist twist on everything. The Church is in error. The Creeds are wrong. Blah, blah, blah. Folks, the more i go back and read hyperpreterist rhetoric (including my own past stuff), the more and more i come to the realization that this is a school of thought ran mostly by theological neophytes. I know…hard pill to swallow by those who pride themselves as “teachers of the law”, but eh…what else would you call them? My throat is still soar. Here’s an example: This is Part 2 of a sermon I recently preached and discussed with folks at church regarding how the terms “heaven, earth and sea” are often used to describe convenantal – not material – realities in the Bible’s redemption story. Here are examples where the term “heaven and earth” seems to be describing the people of Israel. Gen 2:4 “These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens”. This word “generations” is used 39 other times in the Old Testament. It is only used of people and family geneologies elsewhere in Scripture. As in, “these are the generations of Noah…” or Jacob. Another example, Dt 32:1, God’s often repeated rally cry, “Hear oh heavens and listen oh earth to the ...

Nothing deep. Just some quick thoughts i had this week inspired by Gary DeMar’s God and Government series. My departure from hyper preterism has renewed my interest in postmillennial and theonomist writings, so lately i have been digging out some old books that i had buried in my shed. I started re-reading DeMar’s three volume set in January and finished it last week. I highly recommend the series, especially for homeschoolers! One of the points that Gary made over and over again is that he who determines the law is god. Of course, there is but one God and He has revealed His law to us. Yet, when we reject this law and create our own, we have in essence replaced Yahweh with a “god” of our own making. This was the sin in Eden. The serpent raised doubts concerning Yahweh’s Law and encouraged Eve to be a law unto herself, so that she would “be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Ge 3:5) This cosmic reversal gradually finds its ultimate expression in a divine and messianic state; a state that seeks to control and govern every aspect of our lives according to its self-proclaimed authority. And as Del Tackett has mentioned in the “State” portion of his Truth Project series, this sphere of government has the potential of becoming the most dangerous because it “bears the sword.” With all of this on my mind, i was listening to my new Word of Promise audio bible and the nature of the ...

Mr Michael Miano has recently replied with the following to my apology video: Here we have a great example of a man using his feelings and an appeal to emotion to persuade people from a view of fulfillment. So let’s get this straight, the Full Preterists provide Scriptures and explanations and are met with name calling and appeals to emotion. The reformation is now, ask questions and demand Scriptural answers. search the Scriptures! Mr Miano clearly does not understand the purpose of the video, but that is besides the point. In my opinion, Mr Miano has offered nothing but talk and has failed to support the assertion that all prophecy was fulfilled by the end of the first century. So, i have invited Mr Miano to come over to RCM and argue his case for a fulfillment of I Corinthians 15. After forgetting about the invite, i gently reminded him of it yesterday and now he is here, assuring me…”Don’t you sweat Jason, I will be giving details concerning 1 Corinthiahs 15 soon.” I have created a public group here on RCM for this discussion. VISIT HERE. When Mr Miano is ready, he can begin posting his “details concerning 1 Corinthians 15″ in reply to the text of that chapter that i have provided in the group’s forum. I won’t pressure him to provide anything “soon”, but i hope that as one who supposedly takes “soon” serious that he won’t fudge on the word now. ( : We wait.

I came across an article on the Gospel Coalition website today that contained a brief and wonderful summary of how full preterists treat Scripture. No, the article was not on full preterism. Very few, if any, are; it’s just not that important. Instead, the article was a response from DA Carson and Tim Keller to the Elephant Room fiasco. The Elephant Room, for those of you unaware, is a “conference” of sorts, in which seven highly influential pastors were invited to have “blunt conversations” about their differences. Things got really heated when TD Jakes was invited…a prosperity-gospel, modalist pastor from Texas. While Jakes’ false gospel of health and wealth was ignored, he was cornered about his belief concerning the Trinity. For some, including the moderators of the conversation James McDonald and Mark Driscoll, Jakes affirmed an orthodox understanding of the Trinity. However, for many, his “affirmation” was not enough. It was too vague and created more questions than answers. This in turn has led to a ton of blog fights. The whole thing, in my opinion, is sad. Even if Jakes unquestionably affirmed the Trinity, that would not be enough to embrace this false teacher. I seriously question the motives for having the whole “conversation” to begin with. The whole idea, in my opinion, is just silly and resembles some over-dramatic MTV “celebrity boxing” match. It has that “reality show” feel that just bugs the crap out of me. But, i was interested in reading from Carson. And it was in ...

Here’s a little testimony i wrote out for an individual who asked me how the Lord delivered me from the error of full/hyper preterism. But first, I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! (2 Co. 11:1) For those of you who don’t know me, i embraced the full preterist framework (all prophecy was fulfilled by ad70) in late 2002 and went on to aid Sam Frost as the techie guy behind Christ Covenant Church, which in 2006 turned into The Reign of Christ Ministries (RCM) after CCC folded up; as well as created SGP with Michael Bennett. I’m still running RCM, but left SGP over two years ago. I have also created sites for Ward Fenley’s NCMI, Jim Kessler, and Michael Sullivan. I came close to becoming Don Preston’s webmaster after Scott left, but that didn’t work out. (i don’t even remember why) I only mention all of this because some have tried to easily dismiss my renouncement of full preterism by pointing out that i was not a major player to begin with. That may be true, but they certainly didn’t think so when i was helping them out. ( : My involvement with many, especially at SGP, also gave me plenty of opportunity to learn what was going on with the online full pret community. When i was moderating SGP, it became the most active full preterist spot on the net (on life-support now) and because of our strict rules there, i literally ...

While on Facebook yesterday, i stumbled upon yet another thread where a hyperpreterist was ranting and raving about Sam and i. It never ceases to amaze me how some hyperpreterists will whine about being called names, yet a week doesn’t go by where i can’t do a little surfing, just on Facebook alone, and see my name being trashed all over the place…coming from people i have little to no interaction with at all. That was the unfortunate part. But, what some intended for harm, God caused for good. As a result of the “exposure”, a hyperpreterist messaged me, expressed an open mind, and asked a sincere question about Luke 21.22. For those of you unfamiliar with this verse, here it is: …for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. (Luke 21.22 ESV) Let’s expand the context a bit: But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem ...

Occasionally, folks will have questions for us but are hesitant to ask because the only place, until now, to ask the question is in the comments section following an article; and if that question doesn’t fit with the topic of the article, the question is withheld. The Q&A group is a place for you to ask those “off topic” questions. As a reminder: This group, along with all our groups, is private. Another reason why a few folks hesitate with public discussions is because they know that sites like PretCompost exist, merely for the purpose of slinging poo on people. A private group offers a place for mature discussion and hides the content from those who spend the vast majority of their lives lurking around here, yanking quotes out of content, and putting their ridiculous spin on everything. You will be less likely to see your name trashed by having your discussion in these groups. But, if you don’t care what they are doing (and you shouldn’t), then feel free to use the comments section as usual. We’re flexible. ( : Joining a group is free and all you have to do is create an account. REGISTER. Once you register, visit the Q&A group page and request membership. That’s it! Enjoy!

It is always interesting to track links to our site and check out what people are saying. I came across this gem tonight on Facebook by the “Preterist Voice” Allyn Morton, who is responding to Sam’s latest piece on the “body” of Christ: On Reign of Christ, Sam Frost says in an article, and I quote, “We have already proven on this site that the Bible teaches that Jesus retains his body of incarnation, glorified, in the heavens (I John 4.2; Phil 3.21). Full Preterism denies the doctrine of Christ’s present humanity in that they deny his current glorification, bodily.” Does any preterist really believe that the body od Christ did not rise and come out of the tomb? Does and preterist deny “his(sic) current glorification, bodily”? This innaccurate article, similar to many of Sam Frost’s articles, really shows that he did not qualify in the first place as a 19 year pin full preterist. Sam goes on to say that we (therefore) get rid of the body of Christ by spiritualizing His coming. If the second coming of Christ was indeed an unseen, thus spiritual coming, then it is not full preterism who is in denial but rather Sam Frost. Sam then says, “Full Preterism denies that we will see the bodily presence of Jesus, or that he (sic) will, one day, descend bodily.” Actually Full Preterism denies that the event is a future to us event. Does that help you, Sam? In the past 12 months that we have ...

Folks, if you are looking for a great resource on creation issues from someone with an actual PhD in Astronomy, please check out John Byl’s blog, Bylogos. It is fantastic. Here is a guy who sticks to his guns regarding the authority of Scripture, and can tackle the “scientists” at their level. Here’s a quote from his recent post: One difficulty, according to Carrier, is that Christians try to make the Bible untestable by suitably re-interpreting the Bible so as to avoid any possible risk of scientific disproof. Thus we get hermeneutical inventions such as old Earth creationism, theistic evolution, or the notion that Gen.1-11 is meant to convey a purely theological message. Carrier comments, “Supernaturalists now make every effort to place their beliefs beyond meaningful test precisely because their beliefs have failed countless tests—indeed, most have been decisively refuted. This is evidence of the desperation of their position but not of the untestability of more honest supernatural claims.“ I think that Carrier is quite correct in this observation. The proper apologetic response is not to subvert the plain meaning of the biblical text–as many modern theologians are prone to do–but, rather, to challenge the naturalist interpretation of the empirical evidence. http://bylogos.blogspot.com/2011/12/naturalist-meltdown.html Bookmark this site!

Remember what Thomas Brooks said about false teachers? THE SECOND CHARACTER False teachers are notable in casting dirt, scorn, and reproach upon the persons, names, and credits of Christ’s most faithful ambassadors. Thus Korah, Dathan, and Abiram charged Moses and Aaron that they took too much upon them, seeing all the congregation was holy (Num. 16:3). You take too much state, too much power, too much honour, too much holiness upon you; for what are you more than others, that you take so much upon you? And so Ahab’s false prophets fell foul on good Micaiah, paying of him with blows for want of better reasons (1 Kings 22:10-26). Yea, Paul, that great apostle of the Gentiles, had his ministry undermined and his reputation blasted by false teachers: “For his letters”‘ say they, “are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak and contemptible” (2 Cor. 10:10). They rather contemn him than admire him; they look upon him as a dunce rather than a doctor. And the same hard measure had our Lord Jesus from the Scribes and Pharisees, who laboured as for life to build their own credit upon the ruins of his reputation. And never did the devil drive a more full trade this way than he does in these days (Matt. 27:63). Oh! the dirt, the filth, the scorn that is thrown upon those whom the world is not worthy. I suppose false teachers mind not that saying of Austin, Quisquis volens detrahit famae, nolens addit ...

We hear often from the hyperpreterists* that the futurists** are arbitrary and inconsistent when it comes to teaching that there will be a future, bodily return of Christ. I used to say the same thing. In fact, that was my main point of contention against the “futurists” in an “Acts 1.11″ lecture i gave at a hyperpreterist conference in Bristol, CT back in August of 2006. I shake my head when listening to that lecture now. Standard hyperpreterist fare. Step 1: Immediately leave the verse in question and bring up all the “time texts”. “But Jesus said over here that his coming was soon” and “Jesus said over here ‘this generation.’” Step 2: Argue that there is only one “coming” spoken of in the New Testament. And, when this “coming” happens, the totality of what that coming was to accomplish would happen all at once. Step 3: Go back to the verse in question and squeeze it into the box created from steps 1 & 2. That is how 99% of hyperpreterism is argued. And what helped bring me out of hyperpreterism was realizing that not everything can fit in the ad70 box. Are ‘futurists’ really arbitrary and inconsistent or does ‘futurism’ exist because there is an attention to finer details, of which hyperpreterists ignore? Let’s do a simple lesson. We seem to have a contradiction on our hands at first glance regarding the presence of Christ. First, in Matthew 28, Christ issues forth what is commonly called the Great Commission: Now the ...

Back in my hyperpreterist days, a friend gifted me with G.K. Beale’s book The Temple and the Church’s Mission. I thought it was a great read. Strangely however, the overarching purpose of creation that is explained in the book never settled in my mind. As i did with so many orthodox writings back then, i read, enjoyed, and even tried to implement some of the doctrine into my hyperpreterist framework; not understanding that if these doctrines were in fact true, hyperpreterism was completely demolished. I reread Beale’s book shortly after renouncing hyperpreterism and, well, now i get it. While i do not agree with every conclusion Beale reaches, i do agree with that overarching purpose. In June, i took a trip down to Punta Gorda, Belize and did a two hour summary of the first half of the book at the Belize Training Center. When i returned, a few buddies of mine asked me to elaborate a little on the summary. The following is a post i wrote for them. While it is certainly not a full review of the book, i thought i would repost it here to perhaps whet your appetite. Ironically, this book has made its rounds in hyperpreterist circles and has been praised; but they – like i once did – are missing the huge elephant in the room. Although Beale does not claim to be a postmillennialist, what he argues in that book is what postmills like Chilton and Gentry have been saying for a long ...

That Satan labours might and main, by false teachers, which are his messengers and ambassadors, to deceive, delude, and for ever undo the precious souls of men (Acts 20:28-30; 2 Cor. 11:13-15; Eph. 4:14; 2 Tim. 3:4-6; Titus 1:11,12; 2 Peter 2:18,19): “I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err” (Jer. 23:13). “The prophets make my people to err” (Micah 3:5). They seduce them, and carry them out of the right way into by-paths and blind thickets of error, blasphemy, and wickedness, where they are lost forever. “Beware of false prophets, for they come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (Mat. 7:15). These lick and suck the blood of souls: “Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision” (Phil. 3:2). These kiss and kill; these cry, Peace, peace, till souls fall into everlasting flames, &c., Proverbs 7. Now, the best way to deliver poor souls from being deluded and destroyed by these messengers of Satan is, to discover them in their colors, that so, being known, poor souls may shun them, and fly from them as from hell itself. Now you may know them by these characters following: THE FIRST CHARACTER False teachers are men-pleasers (Gal. 1:10; 1 Thess. 2:1-4). They preach more to please the ear than to profit the heart: “Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophecy no unto us right things: speak ...

Apparently, Ed Hassertt has returned to the faith-destroying framework known as hyperpreterism. Recall my initial response to Ed Hassertt’s denial of hyperpreterism: (July 31, 2011) Ed, i was probably one of the first to read your email, but i wanted to take a day or two to respond. To be completely honest with you, i had mixed feelings. On one hand, i was excited about the possibility that another person is leaving the dangerous teachings of full preterism. On the other hand, i was a little skeptical about all this, considering similar past actions and also the emotions you recently displayed in light of your book not selling well. I hope me saying that doesn’t upset you…i’m just being honest with you. I don’t want to be a fake on here and tell you what i think you want to hear. The very first thought that crossed my mind after reading your email was, “ok…is this going to be another one of those episodes where all this reconciliation and stuff go out the window a day or two later?” Surely, you can understand why i would think that. But, i also believe in a powerful, sovereign Lord who is able to change the hearts of men. I know He did mine. If this is in fact genuine, it is certainly not beyond His ability to perform and i don’t want to be guilty of doubting God. I know that when i left full preterism, there were a number of people ...

Some site owners, especially on Ning, want to copy and paste content that is unique to this site on their site in order to spark conversation. We ask that you do NOT copy and paste ENTIRE articles, but instead copy a sentence or two and then link to the full article here. There are many reasons why we ask this to be done. One obvious reason is that it defeats the whole point in having a site to begin with. If our content can be accessed elsewhere, then we lose traffic. Another reason: it’s stealing. I realize that some of you may have asked for permission in the past and have been told different things, by Sam or even myself. However, Sam and i have chatted about this today and are now on the same page. Websites that are found copying and pasting entire articles from here will be contacted and asked to remove the material. If that is not honored, I will go to the next step of reporting the site to the site host, as well as reporting the site as “spam” to Google. Thanks for your cooperation, Jason

November 1st, 2011 has been a highly anticipated day for theologically-driven hiphop heads. Two great albums were released today: The Attributes of God by shai linne and The Ephesians Project by ChristCentric. To add to that, Timothy Brindle makes an appearance on both. Tim is no doubt one of my top five rappers, who released one of my favorite projects back in ’02 entitled The Great Awakening. Tim was admonished by his wife, pastor, and fellow artists to step back from hip-hop ministry in late 2005 to deal with his personal and marital struggles. After weekly encouragement of Gospel-centered preaching, close pastoral shepherding and biblical counseling from the elders of Christ Redemption Fellowship (PCA), Tim announced his ‘return’ earlier this year. I’ll let shai explain the purpose of his album: As I looked around at what has been going on in Christian music lately, I noticed that a lot of it is more about us than about God. Don’t get me wrong, there are many songs that make references to God and speak about the implications of the gospel, which is great. But a lot of it is not actually about God himself. The main subject of most of the Christian songs I hear is usually something other than God. That’s problematic on a number of levels. As the time came to do another record, I was studying Exodus 33-34, and I noticed that when Moses asked to see God’s glory (Ex. 33:18), God responded by describing his character. Jesus says in ...

Terry has been a “Facebook Friend” for years. In fact, at one point Terry invited me to his ning site and asked that i contribute to it. He wrote, Hello Jason. I know your a great preterist writer lol. I just added a preterist network to my web site and I would love to have you as member there as will. Hope you can join us. So i did. Thanks for join Jason. I am really looking forward to any input you have. I love reading what you write. Fast forward: I deactivated FB for awhile and then recently reactivated it, to find some of the old “friends” still intact, including Terry. This past Saturday, Terry wrote a piece in which he examines Jesus’ use of “clouds”, in reference to his coming. Now, having been a hyperpreterist for seven years and having recorded a 1.5 to 2 hour lecture on Acts 1.11, i could easily predict what Terry was going to argue and how. The argument basically goes something like this…(1) highlight a few passages in the OT where “clouds” are being spoken of in some sort of “metaphorical” way, (2) appeal to the principle of analogia fidei (analogy of faith), and then (3) argue that “consistency demands” that the clouds mentioned in the verse in question means the same thing it meant in all these other passages. There are a number of problems with this line of reasoning. And i was hoping to engage Terry on the problems and ...

Originally, i got interested in hiphop because of the beats. Later, i came to see the awesome potential rap has in being able to express theological concepts. You can rattle off an entire sermon in a rap. And some artists do. (Shai Linne, Timothy Brindle, ChristCentric, and so on) Today, Braille released Native Lungs. I try not to flood RCM with hiphop vids, since many don’t like the genre; but after listening to a couple of songs, i couldn’t help it. Two songs stuck out big time for me: Deep Rest and Death In Me. It’s great that i can listen to this and just sit back and bob my head. Two years ago i would have been itching to write a “critique” of Braille’s futurism, telling him how wrong he is. Glad those days are over. I guess that is why these two songs in particular really hit home for me today. You’ll understand when you listen to them. You can download the entire album HERE for free. Here are the videos for those two songs, complete with song and background. I really like Odd Thomas’ verse (third verse) on Death In Me. Lyrics inspired by Spurgeon. Also, see if you can catch all the metal/hard rock band names on Theory Hazit’s verse in Death In Me (first verse). Enjoy!

When Ed Hassertt announced that he was finished with full preterism, confused hyperpreterist John Hedges offered up this gem of a response: Ed Hassertt has recently left preterism and one of the main reasons is as follows “To me it seems preterism has become a convenient theology for those who want to have a “biblical” excuse to leave the oversight and authority of a local church, and want to be on their own.” This kind of caught me off guard. I haven’t met anyone in the preterist circles that has claimed they came to the preterist view because they needed a reason to ditch their local Baptist congregation. Ed also assumes the “local church” has authority. Where does this idea come from in light of scripture? What local church? Baptist, first Baptist, Church of Christ, Independent reformed, 4 squares? That argument falls flat on its face. Ed also claims by ditching Preterism it will make him a better Christian. Ed here’s a heads up for you. Your local church will also tell you that you can stop doing other things (i.e. works) to make yourself a better Christian. Now in fairness I know Ed was an author of a book and was debating preterism 24/7, the ongoing debate could have easily angered him etc. I’m still waiting for a former preterist to lay out a biblical and spiritual i.e. God told me run, response to as why the left preterism. Nothing speaks better to the nonsense that is hyperpreterism than the responses ...

I’ll never forget my struggle. Amanda was pregnant with Jordan and we were ‘living’ at UAB hospital. We lost our first child and Jordan wanted to pop out early as well, so Amanda had to stay in their care and on constant watch. I was fresh into the study of election/predestination, something i was forced to wrestle with from a plain reading of Scripture. All i could think about was, “is Jordan one of the elect? What happens if he doesn’t make it? Won’t it stink to raise and love a son who might not have a ‘chance’ at salvation because he is not ‘chosen’? Wouldn’t it be better if free-will were true and ultimately, it would be up to Jordan because then he would have a chance?” Lots of questions. Lots of doubts. “Doesn’t the fact that some are chosen imply that some are not?” But then it hit me one day in that hospital room…Does ‘free-will’ guarantee anything? Let’s just say, for sake of argument, that predestination is not true and it is ultimately up to every individual whether they will make it or not. Does this now guarantee that Jordan will one day decide to follow Christ? No, of course not. No matter what side of the fence you fall on ~ Calvinist vs Arminian/Pelagian ~ you still have to face the reality that not everyone is going to believe and be saved. Affirming ‘free-will’ then doesn’t solve this tension. In fact, i believe it makes it ...

In the synoptic Gospels, we read of an encounter between our Lord and the Sadducees in which the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, create a little scenario that was designed to reveal the absurdity of the doctrine of resurrection. This encounter was one of a series in which the Jewish leaders attempted to trap Jesus in his words, “So as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.” They wanted him dead. “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. And the second and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. Afterward the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.” There are probably a number of legal reasons for why such a scenario would create problems; however, the most obvious one is that all individuals involved are now risen and alive at the same time — so which husband gets to claim her as wife? How would 7 men decide whose wife she will be? Would all 7 men have her as wife? After all, as the Levirate law stated, “if the man does not wish to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up ...

Kerry Clinite recently wrote, “It has been argued that Isaiah 41:4 and Isaiah 46:10 speak to and end of human history or history general which includes this present earth, and yet between these two chapters is Isaiah 45:12, and Isaiah 45:17-18. It is clear in these passages that God created this earth to be inhabited with no end mentioned, and that the everlasting salvation preached upon the earth has no end. This is confirmed by the Lord by one more passage in that chapter, Isaiah 45:23 in which it is clearly related to Rom 14:11 and Phili 2:10 and to Jesus Christ and His Gospel.” I love how God works. I read this comment for the first time tonight. Two days ago, i was sitting in my truck, waiting for my trailer to get loaded with BMW bumpers, and i was reading Philippians on my iPhone using the cool ESV app. The app informed me that Phillipians 2.10 is a quote from Isaiah 45.23, and is also used by Paul in Romans 14. As i went and read all of these contexts, i began to think about the “all” and “every” language and this question of “infinite procreation”. I even came real close to recording a podcast about it in the truck, but it was too loud in the cab and i wasn’t about to shut the truck off. With no A/C, those trucks get real hot, real fast. So, i simply “facebooked” the Isaiah 45.23 text from the app ...

Last week, my wife and i took a much needed trip. We traveled down to Punta Gorda, Belize to spend a week with some dear friends, Cohen and Amie Ezelle, along with their four precious children. I met Cohen ten years ago at work. After expressing some frustration with my boss about having to pick up workers every morning to do lawn care – many of whom were probably illegal – he finally hired for me a permanent, legal worker. When i first saw Cohen, i thought, “oh boy. A short, skinny guy with glasses. He doesn’t look like a worker.” I’m skinny too, but my 6’7″ frame at least makes me appear somewhat athletic. lol. I wasn’t sure about this guy. Boy was i wrong. Cohen turned out to be one of the hardest working guys i have ever met. Never whined about the long hours. Always on time. Combine that with the fact that he was a student at Southeastern Bible College, and we hit it off pretty well. We would drive around Birmingham all day, cutting lawns and talking about Scripture. I even had the privilege of leading him into calvinism. We became best buds. Even during my little detour into the heretical teachings of full preterism, Cohen always stuck with me. He was one of the few that did. And he knew how to do it without compromising his own beliefs and voicing strong opposition to full preterism. Fast forward a few years…Cohen and Amie fulfill ...

John Hedges has written a cute little piece entitled Why I am leaving full preterism. In it, he mocks those of us who have left full preterism, attributing our departure to being “scared”. He claims that our criticisms of full preterism are out of “fear” and “anger” and that we are looking for some sort of peace in the “Creeds and Theologys [sic] of men.” None of this surprised me. But what did catch me a little off guard were some of the responses to Hedges’ piece and who they came from: Michael Bennett claims, “This one is a classic.” Brandon Littlejohn says, “This is stinkin funny! I had to join the site just to say well done on this one.” And Wayne Critchfield says, “brandon i second that. why people do what they do ( the hidden motives ) is the key. were they defrocked? trying to be more credible in the orthodox world, what motivates a person to throw out the baby. and now like dave O said, who can trust what they are teaching now? for that matter what are they teaching now?” They can’t be serious. These three men in particular are men i have known for a while and thought highly of, yet they cheer this garbage on? They are living in a fantasy world. I didn’t leave full preterism because of a “fancy website”. I didn’t leave full preterism because of the lack of “college credits” within the full pret community.
“Oh boy…here we go again. The ‘convoluted logic’ of Mike Bennett? Jason, you are so mean and rude.” Before i get into Mike’s “logic”, let me share with the full pret post police what Mike Bennett recently emailed me out of the blue: Jason it is apparent that you don’t know what you believe about anything any more and that you so enamoured [sic] with Sam that you didn’t even realize that he said exactly what I had stated, in the past, because of your Sam Frost idle [sic] worship…Sam Frost. Jason’s golden calf. The email came with a nice painting of the golden calf at Sinai. How thoughtful! So there you have it. “Leave the koolaid compound”, as Sam put it, and you get accused of idolatry. Oh, and then there is also the recent post from Brandon Littlejohn who says of me, “Much of this flamboyancy is the same fluff that the apostles labored against. Unlike, my counterpart, I admonish you to not trust me but to trust your Bible; this is the appeal of Full Preterism.” Make no mistake about it folks. When you question the full preterists, you are questioning God Himself and flirting around with idolatry. And to think that all this time, i thought it was the “orthodox” who equated their words with God’s. Funny how that works. Calling someone’s logic ‘convoluted’ doesn’t sound quite as bad now, does it? Back to Bennett: Mike has a “logical” argument that he has pasted quite a ...

Full preterism is a different Gospel and a false one at that. But don’t take my word for it. One only has to read the pioneers of the movement. Lately, i have been reading back through Max King’s “The Cross and the Parousia” which is perhaps THE pioneer work of full preterism – the belief that all prophecy has been fulfilled by ad70. You will come across, of course, a number of full preterists who will act like Max wasn’t that big of a deal, but this almost always comes from individuals who have offered next to nothing in explaining full preterism to the length that Max did. Frankly then, i don’t give a rip about what some unknown Ning blogger has to say. Max wrote a 784 page book. I’ll stick to it. On page 510 in a chapter concerning the resurrection of the dead, Max has this to say about “full preterism”: Of course, this begs the question of what all Scripture includes as the “inheritance”. But notice – complete and total fulfillment in ad70 “was the sum and substance of the gospel.” But if Max’s quote isn’t enough for you, let’s look at a few quotes from those individuals who have offered next to nothing in explaining full preterism systematically: Of course, fulfilling “everything He said He’d fulfill at His coming” is full preterism for Mike. So either full preterism is true, or Jesus lied and the very foundation of the Gospel is destroyed. I could go ...

Today on Facebook, a buddy of mine shared a link to an interesting lecture by Dr Peter Jones entitled, “A Gnostic Gospel.” Dr Jones holds an MDiv from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, a ThM from Harvard Divinity School, and a PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary. He is Director of Christian Witness to a Pagan Planet, and Adjunct Professor of New Testament, as well as Scholar in Residence at Westminster Seminary California. You know, another one of these “fake scholars”. Anywho…interestingly, in a lecture about the paganism that is masquerading around as “Christianity” nowadays, the name Tim King came up. Say what? Nah, can’t be. You mean, THE Tim King? The founder of the Presence movement and one of the big dawgs behind full preterism? Yep. So what does Tim King have to do with Gnosticism? Well, if the new “Presence” website hasn’t made it obvious enough, you might want to check out this video: (the original embed from Ligonier will not show up for some people, so this is from Youtube.
Is full preterism just as bad, if not worse, than dispensationalism? That was the question rolling around in my mind after reading and watching Don Preston’s latest commentary on the March 11th tsunami in Japan. In the article, Don predicts that the “machinery of the dispensational world” will begin to crank once again, capitalizing on the recent tsunami as yet another ‘sign’ that the end is near. Don’s concern is certainly legit. And it’s not that hard to predict. Last days hysteria has been going on for centuries and it was that same “machinery” at work in September of 2001 that i seriously began to question and eventually rejected. 9/11 was not a sign of the end. However, we are creatures of extremes. We get out of one ditch (dispensationalism), only to walk across the road to fall into another ditch (Don’s full preterism). I’ve been in both ditches. The truth, as i have recently come to see, is somewhere in the middle. Full preterism goes to the extreme by saying that ALL BIBLICAL PROPHECY was fulfilled within that generation. One could say that what we have here is new machinery at work. In fact, after hearing about the tsunami, like Don, i immediately thought about how this catastrophe would be pointed to by dispensationalists as another sign of “the end”; but i also thought about how full preterists would be quick to argue in the other direction. You don’t even have to give it much thought. One camp automatically ...

One of the tactics a few full preterists have used against Sam and i has been to make our departure from full preterism appear as something that hastily took place overnight…or perhaps a few nights. Of course, such portrayals have no basis in reality. And even if it did, it wouldn’t prove anything. The fact, however, is that my departure from full preterism can be traced back as far as 2009. The *signs* were there. Granted, i did not think that the criticisms i had back then would lead me to where i am today but nonetheless, one can see some *doubt* appearing as far back as June of 2oo9, when i wrote a blog on SGP entitled, “Meaningless Preterist Phrases.” At the time, my desire was to rid myself of useless arguments and sharpen my full preterist presentation. It eventually ended with me realizing that my full preterism had very little ground to stand on. These are not all the “useless phrases” that i believe full preterists utilize, but it’s a start. I thought i would post it here as evidence that things were stirring in me awhile back…not just “two months ago”. ( : ~ This is just a little something i think about off and on during the day. And part of what sparked it was hearing arguments used against me from other preterists that were normally reserved in arguing against futurists and vice-a-versa.
Michael Bennett has responded to my article, Paul the Deceitful?, and states that my “argument falls apart” once we realize that there was a concept of IBD (immortal body at death) floating around among the Pharisees. If this was the case, then it would not have been “deceitful” on Paul’s part to call attention to his Pharisaical background because apparently not even these Pharisees believed in a physical resurrection of the body. To offer support that the Pharisees taught an immortal body at death view, he pulls a quote of Josephus from a post by Patrick Stone, who is a full preterist IBD advocate: [emphasis his] CHAPTER 8. ARCHELAUS’S ETHNARCHY IS REDUCED INTO A [ROMAN] PROVINCE. THE SEDITION OF JUDAS OF GALILEE. THE THREE SECTS. There are a couple of problems with Michael’s post: First, Michael wants to rest his entire IBD claim on the words “other bodies.” However, this phrase does not necessarily mean “other bodies” in the sense that once a good man dies, he sheds his current physical body and gets a whole new different body altogether. It could mean “other” in the sense that the current body is raised to a new form. It is the same body, but “other” only in the sense that it has been glorified. One could simply gather that from the English. But i did some additional research. Josephus scholar Steve Mason of York University has this to say regarding the ἕτερον σῶμα (other bodies): Take your pick. We can either go ...

Since Sam wrote a follow-up to my piece on MinionDominion, i thought i would go ahead and post it here as well for convenience. However, before i get into this issue of Paul and his trial in Acts, i want to say a quick word about ‘refuting full preterism’. A number of people are asking on numerous websites (especially in response to my apology video) why i haven’t put forth a comprehensive rebuttal of full preterism. The answer is simple: it was a gradual process going into full preterism and it has been a gradual process going out. I don’t have to refute every little full preterist detail in order to walk away from a framework that teaches that all prophecy has been fulfilled by the end of the first century. If we are able to gather from Scripture that there is just ONE prophecy that is yet to be fulfilled, then that’s it…framework demolished. And i believe that has been demonstrated. Full preterism cannot account for the gathering of the FULL number of the elect. Full preterism cannot account for the role of creation. In fact, many full preterists are denying that Scripture even speaks of the origin of physical creation. Full preterism can’t make sense of Christ’s physical resurrection being a firstfruit of the harvest. Another reason why a comprehensive rebuttal of full preterism is not in the works is because full preterism does not even have a systematic, full orbed presentation to refute to begin with! Full preterism ...

A couple of days ago, i was reading through Paul’s letter to the saints at Philippi. In the context of the “resurrection from the dead”, he states: Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. (Philippians 3.17-21 ESV) As far as i know, verse 21 is a standard text used by Christians to enforce the doctrine of the resurrection of the body ~ that is, our flesh. And it sure does seem that way, don’t it? “Ahhh, not so fast”, screams the full preterist who believes that all prophecy has been fulfilled, “Look at the Greek!” Overlooking the fact that hardly any full preterist i know can even read Greek (and i know a bunch)…they will raise a question similar to the one Max King raised in his book “The Spirit of Prophecy”: Why did he use the plural,’our’ and the singular ‘body,’ if he were talking about a general ...

Unfortunately, due to a genuine internet stalker named Roderick Edwards, i have been forced to make some sort of change here at RCM. And what really irritates me is that he is the only reason. If he would just stay away, i wouldn’t have to do this. But, we ARE talking about Roderick here, who i truly believe is certifiable. Here’s a guy that came to my own family blog and tried to leave a comment. Neither my wife nor i wanted him there, so i deleted his comment and left him a note on the blog. What does he go and do? Makes 8 MORE ATTEMPTS to paste the same comment. Finally, i had to enable comment moderation because posterous has next to nothing to offer in terms of ip blocks, etc. Even then, Rod in his sick and twisted little mind persists. After having moved my blog to a different posterous domain, he tries to leave yet ANOTHER comment on my site! I swear, if he had been standing right there, i would have punched his lights out. Same here. Rod has made numerous attempts to leave comments. I have deleted them and made it clearly known that he is not welcomed here. And Sam does not want him here anymore than i do. What does he do? Comments again, using different usernames and email addresses. After deleting and blocking those addresses, you would think he got the hint…right? Nope. Again, we’re talking about Roderick Edwards. In his ...

Virgil Vaduva, but i like this dude. I finally had a chance to hook up with Virgil tonight at a truck stop off of I71, as i am heading towards southern Indiana. I have briefly met Virgil at one of his conferences, but that was it. It’s hard to sit down and chat for a bit at a conference when so much is drawing your attention; especially if you’re the host. Tonight, we just hung out at Hardee’s and chatted for about two hours. You know what was cool about it too? We barely even brought up “preterism”. No time texts. No Jerusalem this, Jerusalem that. We talked about family. We talked a little politics. We talked about work and community. Real life stuff. But it was more than just “talk”. Virgil got me up to speed about some of the things he and his family are doing and that’s what i appreciate the most about this brother…Virgil is a doer. While many of us are just wasting away on the internet, fighting about this, fighting about that (i include myself), this brother is out there making a difference. Making a difference with his family. Making a difference in his community. Sure, he gripes about things, like our country’s current down-spiral, just like anyone else, but this guy is actually putting feet to his words. By the time many of us finish asking, “what should kingdom life look like post ad70?”, Virgil has his hands dirty already. Whether it be on ...

Shortly after recording my latest audio on PretCosmos’ misunderstanding of the law of non-contradiction, I was reminded that I had to deal with this very same issue before with other people. It took me a minute or two, but I finally remembered who it was…it was with Tim Martin and Jeff Vaughn. They, like PretCosmos, gave an example of a contradiction that in reality isn’t one, which in turn reveals their lack of understanding just what exactly a contradiction is. Repost from SGP: First, to avoid from having to type out Jeff and Tim or JL Vaughn and Tim Martin; I have made it easier for myself by combining the two men into one covenantal man and will simply refer to him as Jeff Martin. Second, there was a paragraph in Jeff Martin’s latest response to Sam that I found extremely troubling and may have helped answer for me why this whole conversation never gets very far and why I don’t think it ever will. Let me quote the section: Frost uses this section in BCS to launch into his charge that our view introduces a contradiction in Scripture. However, he did not read our material very carefully. We agree with his point that Genesis 1 and 2 are distinct, non-contradictory accounts. We explained this in later sections that presented our view of creation: Recapitulation takes a theme or subject already introduced and expands on the important or leading feature. Recapitulation zooms in for a closer look…. The double pattern ...

Full length feature in development Written & Directed by Brian Godawa {site} Producer: Jack Hafer Production Company: Boulevard Pictures. Story Albert Fish is a brilliant university professor. But he is also a ruthless killer incarcerated in a hospital for the criminally insane. When Fish escapes from his prison, Dr. Joseph Kallinger, the psychiatrist who testified on behalf of Fish’s insanity, is called in to help profile him with Detective Van Til, the cop who originally caught Fish. Their bitter pairing intensifies when Kallinger exploits Fish’s case for his book on criminal behavior. The stakes increase when one of Kallinger’s female students, with whom he is having a secret affair, is drawn into the danger. And then the videotapes start to show up. Fish is capturing distinguished college professors and debates with them. His proposition: “Give me one valid reason why I should not kill you, and I will let you go.” As Fish dismantles their reasoning, he proceeds to dismember his victims, recording it all on video. The method to his madness is soon revealed: Fish’s murders are a forensic argument, proving himself to be guiltless to the cop and sane to the psychiatrist. Catching the killer is not enough to win this debate. Both heroes will have to face their inner demons. Cruel Logic is a story about human nature, the problem of evil, and one man’s attempt to regain his sanity in a reality turned upside down. Cruel Logic – trailer from Brian Godawa on Vimeo.

One of my favorite hymns, Be Thou My Vision, done to a J Dilla beat. Sorry that the vocals are not professional – i’m just using garageband and a $30 mic. Enjoy! Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight; Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight; Thou my souls Shelter, Thou my high Tower: Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power. Riches I heed not, nor mans empty praise, Thou mine Inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art. High King of Heaven, my victory won, May I reach Heavens joys, O bright Heavens Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

After recording this, i thought there was actually a lot more i could have said, especially concerning the absurd comments by Alan Bondar. While the resurrection of the body is certainly a ‘hope’ for Christians, it is not the end all be all. And saying that only a few have exegeted the text of I Co 15 in nearly 2,ooo years of church history is just absolutely mind-numbing. He also completely misunderstood and butchered Sam’s point about the seed analogy. But, this video isn’t really about Alan. It’s about my own failures.
