Why Do We Homeschool? Intro

Shortly after moving to Tennessee, we registered with an “umbrella” group and were asked on the application why we homeschool. It caused me to pause for a minute, because  as I thought about the question, I realized that we have never really had to “defend” our reasons to anyone. Sure, we have talked about it off and on with family and friends, but I don’t recall ever having to paint the whole picture for anyone. Since then, I thought it would be good to state the reasons as a reminder to ourselves; a reference for future inquiries to help folks understand us a little better; and possibly even help others who are struggling with the issue.

I also want to state from the very get-go that this is NOT meant to condemn those who do not homeschool. There are folks in the homeschool movement who have developed some fairly rotten and snoody attitudes against those who don’t and that is not what I’m about. I have very dear friends who don’t, and I don’t believe for a second that they don’t care for their children or are living in “sin”. People are at different stages and different understandings; God’s grace covers it all. Some of my own reasons for doing so have changed slightly over the years; just not enough to stop. This is merely a “get to know the Bradfield Family” type post.

Considering that it is almost midnight, it doesn’t look like I will be able to write very much longer; in fact, I’ll call it quits here and make this a series. In the next few days, I’ll begin to blog on a reason or two as they come to mind. I’ll also address some of the objections we have heard over the years.

I hope you’ll enjoy this series and I hope it will deepen your understanding of who we are, what we’re doing, and why – that’s the whole purpose behind this site. C-ya soon!

Jason
