Paul Gates of Preterist Blog has written a tremendous article. He alerted me to a verse that I never caught before. I have not noticed this until today. Let me state a little background. While a Full Preterist, I denied that Jesus retained his incarnate body. That is, the man, Christ Jesus, who ascended into heaven, somehow “shed” his incarnate body and was absorbed again into the Godhead. The reasoning was obvious since I held to a “corporate body view” of resurrection. If Jesus retained (and still retains) the body of his incarnation, now glorified in heaven where it remains, the problems for my Full Preterism this would cause were unthinkable. Since I have left Full Preterism, I have engaged in a study of the Incarnation and its relationship to the “human nature” of Christ. “Human nature” is defined as that union that comes from body and soul. This is the way it was applied in the trinitarian formulations over against the Gnostics and the Doceticists. Jesus’ “body of glory” (Phil 3.21) is his current glorified body of his incarnation. This is the definition of “glorification.” Paul Gates has found I John 4.2,3 which reads, “Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God.” Now it may be argued that the Full Preterist does not deny that Jesus ...

String together Calvin, cite Beale and Carson, throw in a little Hodge and Clarke, add some Lightfoot and oila, you get Full Preterism when you put it all together, right? Ever hear that argument before? It was one of my favorites. Ed Stevens and I hashed about the idea of stringing together hundreds of quotes from scholars, past and present, and the Fathers to show that every view of Full Preterism could be shown by such a presentation. Sure, no one of them taught Full Preterism, but put them all together, and you get justification for Full Preterism. Here was the point: Full Preterism was not invented by us, we are just the first ones to put it all together. Hence, the frequent “cut and paste” jobs. The frequent “here’s a quote from Scholar X and Dictionary Y” – see, we Full Preterists aren’t heretics. On the gullible, such as myself, this was a powerful argument and demonstration. What does it prove, though, when looked at from former Full Preterist eyes (which I now own)? Nothing. It proves that you can string together a bunch of quotes into a presupposed box. It shows that orthodox eschatology is not quite in agreement on the details of what they all are in agreement with in the essentials. It shows that where one scholar may say, AD 70, another says, End of the World. Where one scholar has Dan 12.2 at the end of the world, another one has it in Paul’s generation. But, ...

Max King was, without a doubt, my first real foray into the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead. Up to that time in Bible College, and, just growing up in the Church, I “heard” the usual, traditional doctrine of resurrection of bodies at the end of the world. “Glorified bodies” and the like. The discussion would usually turn to “when” rather than “how”. In my Postmillennial days leading up to King, the doctrine was not talked about a great deal. It was assumed. In Postmillennialism, a great deal of time was spent on showing how AD 70 was the “great tribulation”. Well, needless to say, when I read King and began a relationship with him and his son, Tim, there were some things pointed out to me that just didn’t sit right with where my mind was at the time: 1. Consistency. 2. Resurrection is connected with AD 70. “Yeah, right, how do they separate resurrection from the “time of the end”?” Isn’t that inconsistent? And off I went. Stayed there for about 19 years. Even wrote a book on it, Exegetical Essays on the Resurrection of the Dead, now published by Don Preston. While pastoring, we developed a CD set on I Corinthians 15. That sold really well. When one comes out of a view that they had tenaciously defended, it causes a psychological headspin. That I would ever defend the orthodox view of resurrection was an impossibilty. I thought King had utterly demolished it. Well, he did ...

Well, since we have done I Corinthians 15, in spite of the fact that some of my critics continue to insist that I have provided no exegesis since I have left Full Preterism, let’s move on to consider I Thessalonians 4. It shoudn’t be that hard. Here’s the English Standard: But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord,1 that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words. Here is Young’s Literal: And I do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, that ye may not sorrow, as also the rest who have not hope, ...

I will use five works in this post: Milton Terry (Biblical Apocalyptics); David E. Aune (Word Biblical Commentary, Volume 52c, Revelation 17-22); David Chilton (Days of Vengeance); G. K. Beale (NIGTC The Book of Revelation) and J. S. Russell (The Parousia). That Russell shuffles around Rev 20 is to be noted. For exampe, vv. 1-3 as within the time of the fall of Judaism. Vv.4-6 fall within the time of reigning with Christ now. Vv.7-10 is at the virtual end of time and history as we know it (Russell was not a Full Preterist). Finally, vv.11-15 is the judgment solely of the wicked upon at the fall of Judaism. There is nothing entirely inconsistent with Russell’s approach. It is a notorious debate in commentaries as to what “And I saw” constitutes in terms of sequence and chronology. It could represent a new vision, or it could be sequential with the previous vision. In Rev 20 alone “and I saw” occurs 5 times. Theoretically, then, there could be five divisions here which may or may not follow a sequential or chronological order (Beale, in dealing with the phrase, concurs that it does not automatically mean “historical order” – 317). The Book is divided into three “times” if you will: “what you have seen, what is, and what must be after these things” (1.19). John, at the time of writing to the Churches this vision has already seen the vision. He is recounting in chapter 1 what had happned to him, where he ...

Ben Witherington III has a well deserved career in the academic world. He has produced several commentaries in the Socio-Rhetorical Commentary series of his and they are masterpieces. In one particularly celebrated book, Jesus, Paul and the End of the World (IVP, 1992) Ben interacts with a series of NT texts dealing with eschatology proper. In particular his analysis of the text of II Co 5.1-10 (203-215) is fairly thorough, quoting from the major works on this epistle (R.P. Martin, V. P. Furnish, Moule, and, of course, C. K. Barrett). There is a fair consensus here that Paul is dealing with the intermediate state: what happens to the Christian when he dies before the finality of the restoration of all of creation? This is a question that has occupied a good deal of discussion in the historic community as well as the present. Wright tackles it in Surprised by Hope (a work I highly recommend). First off, like my article pointed out (“II Corinthians 3-5″), Paul “mixes his metaphors speaking of both buildings and being clothed” (207). This is certainly true. The idea of going to a “building” (which most if not all scholars see as a metaphor for the body) or being “overclothed” (putting something on something else), I believe, suggest that Paul is alluding to two items that are closely related in terms of meaning. Hence, there is considerably confusion about the “mixing” of metaphors here if both refer to “body”. 5.1 reads, “1 Οἴδαμεν γὰρ ὅτι ἐὰν ...

Perhaps one of the most explicit chapters on the humanity of the son of God is Hebrews 2. There, Jesus is “made a little lower than the angels”. Psalm 8, a psalm of Adam and his creation, is applied to Jesus. Jesus is “made perfect” through suffering, which probably has to do with his being “fit” for the role of High Priest – that is, as Hawthorne has noted, Jesus “became fully qualified to be the pioneer of man’s salvation”. The family of God are called “brothers” (2.11) in that the human solidarity is there and continues to be there. “Since the children have flesh and bloo, he too shared in thier humanity…it is not angels he helps…he had to be made like his brothers in every way…that he might make atonement…” He “tasted death” which can only refer, as the phrase does, to physical death. “Fix your thoughts on Jesus…” (3.1). And so we shall. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. But, why did he die? We are told by the Full Preterist that physical death has absolutely nothing to do with sin. Therefore, the physical death of Jesus had absolutely nothing to do with sin. But, we are told time and time again about the death of Jesus. “He died”. Go ahead, get out your concordance. Look it up. I wrote an article as a Full Preterist a few years ago that wrestled with this problem. Since I was under the impression that FP was correct, ...

In these chapters, Paul is definitely speaking of the change the new covenant regeneration brings to the believers. Again, I believe that he speaks proleptically, writing as if already living in the age to come (since it was to dawn in his own generation). The “powers” of that age were “already” starting their transforming work (Heb 6.5). The age itself had not yet come, but the powers of that age had already begun the prepratorywork that would come to characterize the “generations” (Eph 3.21) and “ages” (Eph 2.7) to come. These coming generations of believers answers the time the Prophets foretold as being dominated by an explosion of the inclusion of “the nations”. These “nations” would, over the span of the ages, come to be known as those “born in Zion” (Ps 87; Is 19.23-25; 56.3-8, et al). These passages prophesy a time when the nations will be considered “Israel”, “sons of Abraham” (Rom 4; Gal 3-4). They will offer sacrifices and offerings in the Temple of Zion, etc. This was the “mystery” (one of them, anyway) of the Gospel (Eph 3.1-6), the inclusion of the nations. Now, even this was “already” at work in Paul’s time. The “power” of God to start the process of causing the nations to stream to Mount Zion (Is 2.1-ff) had begun. That is, what would dominate or characterize the age to come, was already working. Yet, the old covenant remained in force, so the “dividing wall” of hostility as represented by the outward ...

I Jo 3.2 is a bit of a riddle for Full Preterism. The ESV has “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.” But, there is a footnote. The NIV has, “Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, {2 Or when it is made known} we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” The footnote is made known here for both. The Marshall Interlinear has “it” or “he”. Technical commentaries note the translation issue, and this legitimizes the point. “It shall appear” begs the question, “what”? If “he shall appear” is accepted, then we know “what”. I was intrigued by this when I recently was given a copy of First John by Gordon H. Clark, who was a master Greek exegete. His comment on this verse got the ball rolling. I never stick with one commentary, but read several and work on this text with my own ability to read Greek. Such freedom allows me to these texts noting all of the issues surrounding them, and not just listening to my pastors or teachers – including my Full Preterist ones. Clark’s comment states, “No doubt many Christians believe that this passage refers to Christ’s return. They translate phanerothe as, ...

The 1928 Book of Common Prayer is my prayer book. It is the Anglican prayer book (drafted originally by the great Thomas Cranmer, 1548). There is also the Book of Common Order (John Knox, 1556) for Reformed worship that many of those churches still use today. I found out through Dr. K. Talbot that Gordon Clark also used the 1928 prayer book and recently found a reference to it in his commentary on I and II Peter. I absolutely love the Christian calendar and liturgical prayers contained therein, and by the grace of God, found a conservative, 1928 Book of Common Prayer Anglican church here, which I attend every Sunday. The Christian Calendar represents the rearrangement of the Roman calendar we use (January, Febuary, etc.) and, for me, symbolizes the fact that He changed the seasons. Instead of “December” it is “Christmas” with the four weeks before. January is Epiphany, the appearance of Christ. April prepares us for Lent, leading up to Resurrection and Ascension. Trinity Sundays go through the Summer, and on and on. The whole year is structured around the Gospel story. And what has this to do with the Millennium? Nothing. But, in the “daily readings” and “the Psaltery”, the Psalms are divided into thirty segments, for each day of the month, so that one reads the Psalms in their entirety every year (along with the whole Bible if one follows the Daily Readings). And, the other day, in my morning devotions, I read Psalm 90: A ...

The following is an excerpt from Vincent Cheung’s Systematic Theology on the absurdity of embracing the idea that the Bible contains apparent contradictions that can not be resolved. Vincent’s observations are right in line with the observations Jason has pointed out on the Route 66 podcast. ~~~ For any proposition that affirms X, the proposition that contradicts it is one that affirms not-X. This is what a contradiction means. Any proposition that affirms one thing is by necessity also a denial of its opposite. To affirm X is to deny not-X, and to affirm not-X is to deny X. To keep this simple, let us assume that Y = not-X, so that the opposite of X is Y. Thus to affirm X is to deny Y, and to affirm Y is to deny X. Or, X = not-Y, and Y = not-X. Then, since to affirm a proposition is to deny its opposite, to affirm X and Y at the same time is the equivalent of affirming not-Y and not-X. Thus to affirm two contradictory propositions is in reality to deny both. But to affirm both not-Y and not-X is also to affirm X and Y, which again means to deny Y and X. And so the whole operation becomes meaningless. The upshot is that it is impossible to affirm two contradictory propositions at the same time. To affirm the proposition, “Adam is a man” (X), is to deny the contradictory proposition, “Adam is not a man” (Y, or not-X). ...
