There is a wonderful book out I have used over the years called, Heresies: Heresy and Orthodoxy in the History of the Church by Harold O.J. Brown. “No religion has emphasized faith and the necessity of holding right doctrine more than Christianity” (9). “Theology…is to a large extent a reaction against heresy. But heresy…is to a large attempt a response to truth” (9). Let us note this. “[Heresy] is a response to truths imperfectly understood, taken out of context, or perceived as inadequate or unsatisfying.” But, heresy “presupposes” truth. Brown asks, which came first, the heresy, or the truth? Obviously, the truth. Heresy is a reaction. In turn, theology reacts to the heresy. Let’s put this in practical terms. The resurrection of the dead was unequivocally taugh in NT times, and from the earliest records we have of late first to second century Chistianity-in-ascedency it was bodily (I agreed with this fact when I was a hyper preterist). So, what was the reaction? Gnosticism. And, the church that was rising in terms of its growth and spread was “orthodoxy”. The Gnostics died out after a century. Oh, it’s reared its head through the centuries, but it cannot rise against the Church. Now, let’s look at the other point of Brown. “Heresy is a response to truths imperfectly understood, taken out of context, or perceived as inadequate or unsatisfying.” That is, heresy plays on the imperfections of orthodoxy, it’s imprecision in terms, or its “perceived” inconsistency. It claims to come up ...

Selah. Hyper Preterist Mike Sullivan writes, “ I asked Hank H. and his assistant where in the OT was a literal fleshly resurrection was taught at the end of history. His assistant was honest and said the OT didn’t. Hank claimed Daniel 12:2 was the only text. I reminded him that this was the text I gave him a question on (at the studio on air – just an hour ago) that he said he wouldn’t answer but would privately after the show (which was when we were talking). So I asked him again, “If Daniel 12:2 is a fleshly resurrection at the end of time, how is it grammatically and contextually not apart of the “all things” of verse 7 that would be fulfilled in AD 70? How are all of these other things fulfilled in AD 70 except this one?” He again couldn’t answer the question – on air or in private.” Hank Hanegraf, that bastion of theological thought! But, let’s ask Jesus what texts he would use for resurrection: “And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: 35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: 36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. 37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at ...

I have been chatting with Ed Stevens lately, and found this post at Pret Compost. Now, as you know, we have been in a mud slinging battle for quite some time. But, rarely, some interesting points come out of there. These had to do with Ron Paul. First, the video from Full Preterist Pastor, Dave Curtis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q42OY-WsAw He’s for Ron Paul. Now, the response from Dave Green: “Consistent, classical, Koranic Muslims hate us because we will not submit to Islam. One of the goals of Islam is the violent destruction of ALL who will not submit to the planetary domination of Islam. The idea that if we just leave them alone then they’ll be okay and start minding their own business is incredibly naive. America has been attacked by Muslims since its founding. If we withdraw from the world, Islamo Fascism will spread rapidly like Nazism did. As a result we’ll eventually be forced into WWIII because of our inaction and appeasement.” Ouch. Finally, and in order, the reply by Ed Stevens: “Followers of Ron Paul are ignoring and undermining the very ideas that made this country great in the first place. Glenn Beck on his excellent www.GBTV.com internet TV program has clearly shown repeatedly over the past two years that the isolationist policies of people like Ron Paul will disarm us, weaken our military, and leave us totally vulnerable to the global Caliphate (worldwide Sharia Law) agenda of the radical Muslims. Ron Paul is an “isolationist,” undercover Jew hater, and has ...

Here is an excerpt from my upcoming book on Adam and the role he plays in biblical theology: “Finally, I should mention Hebr 2.6-ff wherein we find the author quoting Ps 8. This psalm is widely regarded as a creation song rooted in Gn. The contrast that is set up between Jesus and mankind at present (v.8) is that Jesus has fulfilled this psalm as Man. Though Adam is not explicitly mentioned, he necessarily looms in the background. This psalm indicates the original intention for mankind. However, “at present, we do not see everything subject to him”. “Him” has as its antecedent, “man” in v.7. “But we see Jesus” who has fulfilled the role originally given to Adam, and now lost, as it is, presently. That the psalm was not meant to be taken exclusively for Jesus is made plain in the following verses. The psalm mentions “son of man” (son of adam in Hebrew), and the author states, “In bringing many sons to glory…” (v.10). The mention of “glory” comes, again, from the psalm: “you have crowned him with glory and honor.” Jesus suffers “death” for all (v.9) and this directly links us to the fall of Adam and the entrance of death (as well as his triumph over temptation from the devil – vv.14-18). Through “resurrection” the man, Christ Jesus, is crowned with glory and honor. Bringing many sons to glory, then, means what it meant for Christ: dominion over creation through resurrection. Ultimate restoration of creation and ...

Here’s a little testimony i wrote out for an individual who asked me how the Lord delivered me from the error of full/hyper preterism. But first, I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! (2 Co. 11:1) For those of you who don’t know me, i embraced the full preterist framework (all prophecy was fulfilled by ad70) in late 2002 and went on to aid Sam Frost as the techie guy behind Christ Covenant Church, which in 2006 turned into The Reign of Christ Ministries (RCM) after CCC folded up; as well as created SGP with Michael Bennett. I’m still running RCM, but left SGP over two years ago. I have also created sites for Ward Fenley’s NCMI, Jim Kessler, and Michael Sullivan. I came close to becoming Don Preston’s webmaster after Scott left, but that didn’t work out. (i don’t even remember why) I only mention all of this because some have tried to easily dismiss my renouncement of full preterism by pointing out that i was not a major player to begin with. That may be true, but they certainly didn’t think so when i was helping them out. ( : My involvement with many, especially at SGP, also gave me plenty of opportunity to learn what was going on with the online full pret community. When i was moderating SGP, it became the most active full preterist spot on the net (on life-support now) and because of our strict rules there, i literally ...

As a political junkie, I have been following the Republican debates since they started. I get it from my mom, who got it from the Bible. I am no “two kingdoms” advocate (for a great new book by John Frame, see The Escondido Theology, Whitefield Media Publications – it’s selling like hotcakes). I am an advocate of “lesser of two evils” thinking, but that is another blog. The process of finding a Nominee is messy. It sounds like a theological battle in terms of similarity. Don’t be mean. Don’t publish “attack” adds. I found the answer by Ron Paul tonight to be quite amusing. When asked about attack ads (particularly on Santoram), he was asked if he had issue with that? His answer? The 30 or 60 seconds ads was not enough space to cram in all that he wants to say! In other words, if in reporting the facts is an attack, then attack away! Jesus did. I have been on record for saying I like trench warfare. I recently took my strapping young boys to War Horse. Good movie. The WWI trench battle scenes don’t come close to the actual horrible situation trench warfare was. It was deplorable. And, that got me to thinking, what’s wrong with this process? Does “kindness” mean, “don’t speak the truth”? Of course, people stress, “in love”. Yes, of course. Jesus said to the Pharisees, “in love”, that they were a brood of vipers. Name calling? You bet. The seriousness of that name ...

Well, the Iowa Caucus is in. I usually don’t write political pieces, but hell, this one is shaping up to be a good political fight. As a student of history – American History – this is nothing new. The media, so prone to thinking that our time is somehow unique, lives in a bubble. Political infighting, mudslinging, name calling, etc., has always been a part of the deal. And it should be. I only want the man (or woman) who survives such scrutiny to emerge to the top. It’s a hell of a battle. It’s not pretty. The slightest gaff, the littlest miss-speak, the tiniest historical inaccuracy (“where is Greenland located?”) gets blown up. And, since every politcian has made them (can you spell, “potato”, Mr. Quayle?), every politician will jump on them when you do make them. 30 second ads. Okay. So, with watching the news as a dog in heat looking at fifi across the street, we have Rick “huh?” Santorum. Mitt Romney. Newtonian Physics. And, Ron “tin foil hat” Paul. Paul can’t seem to escape the label of “kook”. Limbaugh, Levin, Hannity, Beck, none of them like him. My mother, a staunch Republican, thinks he is “nuts”. And she drinks news like she does coffee. How did he get this tag? Now, I, an investigator, actually go to Paul’s website and read. I like what I read. Then I dig around a little more. I don’t like what I read. Paul appears to me like a whiner. ...

While on Facebook yesterday, i stumbled upon yet another thread where a hyperpreterist was ranting and raving about Sam and i. It never ceases to amaze me how some hyperpreterists will whine about being called names, yet a week doesn’t go by where i can’t do a little surfing, just on Facebook alone, and see my name being trashed all over the place…coming from people i have little to no interaction with at all. That was the unfortunate part. But, what some intended for harm, God caused for good. As a result of the “exposure”, a hyperpreterist messaged me, expressed an open mind, and asked a sincere question about Luke 21.22. For those of you unfamiliar with this verse, here it is: …for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. (Luke 21.22 ESV) Let’s expand the context a bit: But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, for these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and wrath against this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem ...

To start off the new year, i have added a new discussion group: Questions and Answers. Occasionally, folks will have questions for us but are hesitant to ask because the only place, until now, to ask the question is in the comments section following an article; and if that question doesn’t fit with the topic of the article, the question is withheld. The Q&A group is a place for you to ask those “off topic” questions. As a reminder: This group, along with all our groups, is private. Another reason why a few folks hesitate with public discussions is because they know that sites like PretCompost exist, merely for the purpose of slinging poo on people. A private group offers a place for mature discussion and hides the content from those who spend the vast majority of their lives lurking around here, yanking quotes out of content, and putting their ridiculous spin on everything. You will be less likely to see your name trashed by having your discussion in these groups. But, if you don’t care what they are doing (and you shouldn’t), then feel free to use the comments section as usual. We’re flexible. ( : Joining a group is free and all you have to do is create an account. REGISTER. Once you register, visit the Q&A group page and request membership. That’s it! Enjoy!

Well, it’s been an interesting year, no doubt. You have witnessed the slow move from Full Preterism to a full orbed orthodox view. I tried to hang on at first to Full Preterism as much as I could. Even my earlier attempts of “squaring” things were fraught with difficulties. But, I was convinced of four things: the Bible taught an end of history; the resurrection of the dead is, indeed, bodily; we we will see Jesus in his incarnate body again; and he shall reign over all creation, visibly. The Christian Church has not always taught these essential aspects of eschatology with clarity. The situation of the history of eschatology can be summed up in the conversation with two questions: What is fulfilled? What is yet unfulfilled? Full Preterism, I have come to conclusion, is extreme in its answer: it was all fulfilled. Forms of Dispensationalism are equally extreme: it is wholly future. Scholarship, unequivocally, has decided that the conversation is best held in-between these two extreme points. I think that is the wisest decision. We have accomplished and grown this year beyond what we originally expected. Many of you have expressed great thanks for us being honest enough to preach our convictions without the fear of our former associations within the Full Preterist movement’s criticisms. We knew they would come. We did not expect the ferocity, however. Not all FP’s were this way. But, some of them were and continue to be. I have never doubted my faith since ...

You can’t have a conversation, or even begin one with the hyperpreterist, without the word “near” coming into play at the outset. It was the great hook of that system that snagged and reeled me in for so many years. I just could not “get around” them and remain “consistent”. And, if you had a final coming after the “coming” in AD 70, then you were a man pleaser, a creed worshipper, a greedy coward, or an inconsistent moron (a good description of the “futurist” church, eh?). The word “near” according to the Friberg Lexicon, is an “adverb; (1) of space near, close to (JN 3.23); absolutely close by, near at hand, neighboring (JN 19.42); (2) of time near, imminent, close (MT 26.18); (3) figuratively, of close or intimate relationship near, close to (EP 2.17).” Note the distinctions. “Space” and “time”. My sink is “near” me. New Year Eve is “near”. Which one is “space” and the other, “time”? Louw-Nida makes the same distinction. BAGD and virtually all of the standards make the same distinction. So, the question for the interpreter becomes, “which is it? Near in terms of “space” or “time”? For example, “”Now the Jewish Passover was near….” Clearly, time is meant here. But, take the verbal form of this word, as found in Mk 1.15: “the time has come. The kingdom is near”. Morna Hooker can ask whether “present” or “imminence” is meant (The Gospel According to Mark). It could go either way, in that Dodd (Parables ...

It is always interesting to track links to our site and check out what people are saying. I came across this gem tonight on Facebook by the “Preterist Voice” Allyn Morton, who is responding to Sam’s latest piece on the “body” of Christ: On Reign of Christ, Sam Frost says in an article, and I quote, “We have already proven on this site that the Bible teaches that Jesus retains his body of incarnation, glorified, in the heavens (I John 4.2; Phil 3.21). Full Preterism denies the doctrine of Christ’s present humanity in that they deny his current glorification, bodily.” Does any preterist really believe that the body od Christ did not rise and come out of the tomb? Does and preterist deny “his(sic) current glorification, bodily”? This innaccurate article, similar to many of Sam Frost’s articles, really shows that he did not qualify in the first place as a 19 year pin full preterist. Sam goes on to say that we (therefore) get rid of the body of Christ by spiritualizing His coming. If the second coming of Christ was indeed an unseen, thus spiritual coming, then it is not full preterism who is in denial but rather Sam Frost. Sam then says, “Full Preterism denies that we will see the bodily presence of Jesus, or that he (sic) will, one day, descend bodily.” Actually Full Preterism denies that the event is a future to us event. Does that help you, Sam? In the past 12 months that we have ...

Roderick “bonehead” Edwards recently wrote on Pret Compost this little item: What REAL Clarkians say about Talbot and WTS On Facebook there is a group of Clark advocates and here are just a few comments said about Talbot and Talbot’s seminary, WTS. Now remember, these quotes come from avowed Clarkians; not us meanie people who supposedly just don’t like Sam and Talbot because they have never invited us to have burritos. 1. Whitefield Theological Seminary is not really a seminary. It’s a correspondence institution with no in residence programs and a very small faculty. It’s not even accredited by any denomination or educational board. 2. Basically, Sam Frost was a full preterist because he thinks Christianity is about social change and social transformation. That’s not the point of the Gospel at all. 3. I do know a little about Whitefield Seminary. It’s not a seminary at all. 4. In short, Ken Talbot is a two faced dissimulating, equivocating liar…. :) 5. He [Talbot] is most certainly not a Clarkian no matter what he says. Theonomists are notorious liars. They will say whatever they think will win you to their side. 6. Talbot falsely claims to be Clarkian. I can say unequivocally that all theonomists are Van Tilians. It’s beyond ludicrous for Talbot to claim to be a Clarkian….. 7. I wouldn’t trust Talbot as far as I could throw him. 8. The reason Talbot can compromise with heretics is that he is a theonomist, which by definitiion means that he is an ecumenicalist first and a Reformed Christian second… I guess Talbot is only “respected” by ...

Folks, if you are looking for a great resource on creation issues from someone with an actual PhD in Astronomy, please check out John Byl’s blog, Bylogos. It is fantastic. Here is a guy who sticks to his guns regarding the authority of Scripture, and can tackle the “scientists” at their level. Here’s a quote from his recent post: One difficulty, according to Carrier, is that Christians try to make the Bible untestable by suitably re-interpreting the Bible so as to avoid any possible risk of scientific disproof. Thus we get hermeneutical inventions such as old Earth creationism, theistic evolution, or the notion that Gen.1-11 is meant to convey a purely theological message. Carrier comments, “Supernaturalists now make every effort to place their beliefs beyond meaningful test precisely because their beliefs have failed countless tests—indeed, most have been decisively refuted. This is evidence of the desperation of their position but not of the untestability of more honest supernatural claims.“ I think that Carrier is quite correct in this observation. The proper apologetic response is not to subvert the plain meaning of the biblical text–as many modern theologians are prone to do–but, rather, to challenge the naturalist interpretation of the empirical evidence. http://bylogos.blogspot.com/2011/12/naturalist-meltdown.html Bookmark this site!

Remember what Thomas Brooks said about false teachers? THE SECOND CHARACTER False teachers are notable in casting dirt, scorn, and reproach upon the persons, names, and credits of Christ’s most faithful ambassadors. Thus Korah, Dathan, and Abiram charged Moses and Aaron that they took too much upon them, seeing all the congregation was holy (Num. 16:3). You take too much state, too much power, too much honour, too much holiness upon you; for what are you more than others, that you take so much upon you? And so Ahab’s false prophets fell foul on good Micaiah, paying of him with blows for want of better reasons (1 Kings 22:10-26). Yea, Paul, that great apostle of the Gentiles, had his ministry undermined and his reputation blasted by false teachers: “For his letters”‘ say they, “are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak and contemptible” (2 Cor. 10:10). They rather contemn him than admire him; they look upon him as a dunce rather than a doctor. And the same hard measure had our Lord Jesus from the Scribes and Pharisees, who laboured as for life to build their own credit upon the ruins of his reputation. And never did the devil drive a more full trade this way than he does in these days (Matt. 27:63). Oh! the dirt, the filth, the scorn that is thrown upon those whom the world is not worthy. I suppose false teachers mind not that saying of Austin, Quisquis volens detrahit famae, nolens addit ...

“But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come; Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: and that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be but bare grain, it may chance of wheat or of some other grain but God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.”—1 Corinthians 15:35-38. We preach with words; God preacheth to us in acts and deeds. If we would but perceive it, creation and providence are two continual sermons, streaming from the mouth of God. The seasons are four evangelists, each of them having his testimony to utter to us. Doth not summer preach to us of God’s bounty, of the richness of his goodness, of that lavish munificence with which he has been pleased to supply the earth, not simply with food for man, but with delights for both ear and eye in the beauteous landscape the melodious birds, and the flowers of various hue? Have you never heard the still small voice of autumn, who bears the wheatsheaf, and whispers to us in the rustling of the seer leaf? He bids us prepare to die. “All we,” saith he, “do fade as a leaf, and all our righteousnesses are but as filthy rags.” Then comes winter, crowned with snow, and he thunders out a most mighty sermon, which, if we would but listen to it, might ...

One of the things I am looking at is Isaiah65.17-ff. “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. 18 But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness. 19 I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. 20 No more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the young man shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed. 21 They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 22 They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy1 the work of their hands. 23 They shall not labor in vain or bear children for calamity,1 for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the LORD, ...

Here are two Full Preterists and how they approach their view in comparison with evil “futurism” (Historic, orthodox Christianity). The first one was posted on Facebook by Jerry Bowers: “Fulfilled Eschatology has been the most hated, suppressed, distorted & violently opposed message that’s in the Bible. Why? Because Fulfilled Eschatology loosens the shackles that our slave masters (the Controllers) have placed on mankind since the 1st century. Religion has always been a tool used by secular government to better control the masses. Fulfilled Eschatology is the key that unlocks those shackles and frees us from the bondage of Religious & Secular Government control. Both Religion & Secular Government are hell-bent on creating a 1 world order system whereby mankind can only live, survive & prosper, under the most tyrannical powers. It is only when we refuse to allow Religion & Secular Governments these powers, that we can enjoy our God given rights of freedom, peace, personal property, equality & unity. Fulfilled Eschatology is more than what happened in the 1st century; it’s what it’s meant ever since, and points back to the beginning when all was as it was designed to be. Join us in bringing back the everlasting message that we are as God designed, and not what we have been programmed to believe through this temporal creation known as mankind.” Uh huh. The next one was sent to me by Dan Delagrave: “I watched the video again by Jason “what in the world was I thinking” Bradfield, and ...

We hear often from the hyperpreterists* that the futurists** are arbitrary and inconsistent when it comes to teaching that there will be a future, bodily return of Christ. I used to say the same thing. In fact, that was my main point of contention against the “futurists” in an “Acts 1.11″ lecture i gave at a hyperpreterist conference in Bristol, CT back in August of 2006. I shake my head when listening to that lecture now. Standard hyperpreterist fare. Step 1: Immediately leave the verse in question and bring up all the “time texts”. “But Jesus said over here that his coming was soon” and “Jesus said over here ‘this generation.’” Step 2: Argue that there is only one “coming” spoken of in the New Testament. And, when this “coming” happens, the totality of what that coming was to accomplish would happen all at once. Step 3: Go back to the verse in question and squeeze it into the box created from steps 1 & 2. That is how 99% of hyperpreterism is argued. And what helped bring me out of hyperpreterism was realizing that not everything can fit in the ad70 box. Are ‘futurists’ really arbitrary and inconsistent or does ‘futurism’ exist because there is an attention to finer details, of which hyperpreterists ignore? Let’s do a simple lesson. We seem to have a contradiction on our hands at first glance regarding the presence of Christ. First, in Matthew 28, Christ issues forth what is commonly called the Great Commission: Now the ...

Back in my hyperpreterist days, a friend gifted me with G.K. Beale’s book The Temple and the Church’s Mission. I thought it was a great read. Strangely however, the overarching purpose of creation that is explained in the book never settled in my mind. As i did with so many orthodox writings back then, i read, enjoyed, and even tried to implement some of the doctrine into my hyperpreterist framework; not understanding that if these doctrines were in fact true, hyperpreterism was completely demolished. I reread Beale’s book shortly after renouncing hyperpreterism and, well, now i get it. While i do not agree with every conclusion Beale reaches, i do agree with that overarching purpose. In June, i took a trip down to Punta Gorda, Belize and did a two hour summary of the first half of the book at the Belize Training Center. When i returned, a few buddies of mine asked me to elaborate a little on the summary. The following is a post i wrote for them. While it is certainly not a full review of the book, i thought i would repost it here to perhaps whet your appetite. Ironically, this book has made its rounds in hyperpreterist circles and has been praised; but they – like i once did – are missing the huge elephant in the room. Although Beale does not claim to be a postmillennialist, what he argues in that book is what postmills like Chilton and Gentry have been saying for a long ...

Paul Gates of Preterist Blog has written a tremendous article. He alerted me to a verse that I never caught before. I have not noticed this until today. Let me state a little background. While a Full Preterist, I denied that Jesus retained his incarnate body. That is, the man, Christ Jesus, who ascended into heaven, somehow “shed” his incarnate body and was absorbed again into the Godhead. The reasoning was obvious since I held to a “corporate body view” of resurrection. If Jesus retained (and still retains) the body of his incarnation, now glorified in heaven where it remains, the problems for my Full Preterism this would cause were unthinkable. Since I have left Full Preterism, I have engaged in a study of the Incarnation and its relationship to the “human nature” of Christ. “Human nature” is defined as that union that comes from body and soul. This is the way it was applied in the trinitarian formulations over against the Gnostics and the Doceticists. Jesus’ “body of glory” (Phil 3.21) is his current glorified body of his incarnation. This is the definition of “glorification.” Paul Gates has found I John 4.2,3 which reads, “Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God.” Now it may be argued that the Full Preterist does not deny that Jesus ...

That Satan labours might and main, by false teachers, which are his messengers and ambassadors, to deceive, delude, and for ever undo the precious souls of men (Acts 20:28-30; 2 Cor. 11:13-15; Eph. 4:14; 2 Tim. 3:4-6; Titus 1:11,12; 2 Peter 2:18,19): “I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err” (Jer. 23:13). “The prophets make my people to err” (Micah 3:5). They seduce them, and carry them out of the right way into by-paths and blind thickets of error, blasphemy, and wickedness, where they are lost forever. “Beware of false prophets, for they come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (Mat. 7:15). These lick and suck the blood of souls: “Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision” (Phil. 3:2). These kiss and kill; these cry, Peace, peace, till souls fall into everlasting flames, &c., Proverbs 7. Now, the best way to deliver poor souls from being deluded and destroyed by these messengers of Satan is, to discover them in their colors, that so, being known, poor souls may shun them, and fly from them as from hell itself. Now you may know them by these characters following: THE FIRST CHARACTER False teachers are men-pleasers (Gal. 1:10; 1 Thess. 2:1-4). They preach more to please the ear than to profit the heart: “Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophecy no unto us right things: speak ...

Introduction1 Scripturalism is a world and life view. A worldview is a set of beliefs about the various issues of life. All persons have worldviews; they are inescapable. One’s worldview will determine how he views the entirety of life, the decisions he makes, why he does what he does, and so forth. And all worldviews have presuppositions which govern their system of belief; these presuppositions function as axioms from which all decisions are deduced. Scripturalism is that system of belief in which the Word of God is foundational in the entirety of one’s philosophical and theological dealings. (2). This system of thought avers that Christians should never try to combine secular and Christian notions. Rather, all thoughts are to be brought into captivity to the Word of God (2 Corinthians 10:5), which is (a part of) the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). Our minds must be transformed “to prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God,” as found in Scripture (Romans 12:2), i.e., our thoughts must progressively become God’s thoughts (Isaiah 55:6-9), which divine thoughts are only known by the Word of God. Scripturalism, then, teaches that all of our knowledge is to be derived from the Bible, which has a systematic monopoly on truth. This approach to a Christian worldview is taught by the Apostle Paul and is confirmed by the teachings of the Westminster Standards (3). In the words of the apostle: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for ...

String together Calvin, cite Beale and Carson, throw in a little Hodge and Clarke, add some Lightfoot and oila, you get Full Preterism when you put it all together, right? Ever hear that argument before? It was one of my favorites. Ed Stevens and I hashed about the idea of stringing together hundreds of quotes from scholars, past and present, and the Fathers to show that every view of Full Preterism could be shown by such a presentation. Sure, no one of them taught Full Preterism, but put them all together, and you get justification for Full Preterism. Here was the point: Full Preterism was not invented by us, we are just the first ones to put it all together. Hence, the frequent “cut and paste” jobs. The frequent “here’s a quote from Scholar X and Dictionary Y” – see, we Full Preterists aren’t heretics. On the gullible, such as myself, this was a powerful argument and demonstration. What does it prove, though, when looked at from former Full Preterist eyes (which I now own)? Nothing. It proves that you can string together a bunch of quotes into a presupposed box. It shows that orthodox eschatology is not quite in agreement on the details of what they all are in agreement with in the essentials. It shows that where one scholar may say, AD 70, another says, End of the World. Where one scholar has Dan 12.2 at the end of the world, another one has it in Paul’s generation. But, ...

Chatted with Dr. Gentry, and with his permission, I will publish a PDF he sent to me. First, the email I sent him reads: Dr. Gentry, I will brief. First off, blessings to you and yours. I hope all is well. I am in good health. It is floating around hyper-preterist circles that your use of “mello” in Rev 1.19 means you “insist” on this translation as a “necessity.” Your quote from BJFell is “Certainly it is true that the verb “mello” can indicate simply “destined,” or it can be employed in a weakened sense as a periphrasis for the future tense. Nevertheless, when used with the aorist infinitive – as in Revelation 1:19 – the word’s preponderate usage and preferred meaning is: “be on the point of, be about to” 141. However, I have been arguing that they are not paying attention to your careful wording. “Preponderate” and “preferred” are words of possibility, not necessity. Context determines. They want to use this same construction for Acts 24.15, quoting Young’s LT, “that there is about to be a resurrection….” and Acts 17.31, “God, who is about to judge the world.” The former is present infinitive with future (esesthai). I am arguing that context determines translation. My question is, does your quote here support the “necessity” of translation? One can still argue a classic Preterist view in Rev 3.19 with translations that do not have “about to” in it. Thanks. Samuel Frost To which he responded: Sam: Thanks for your note. ...

A CHRISTMAS APOCALYPSE by Timothy King (unless you find it offensive, in which case I got it off the internet) ‘Twas the night before Christmas And there in the church, The pastor glared down From his high, holy perch. It was serious as blood On the doorpost and lintel, At the Soul-Winning, Only-King-James, Baptist Church Fundamental “Jesus is coming! He’ll be here quite soon. He’ll take saints up to heaven And leave sinners to doom.” The flock sat quite still In their pews they were frozen, Praying and hoping They’re one of the chosen. “The rapture is coming Where saints will take flight. It could be tomorrow, I bet it’s tonight!” “Believers will vanish Leaving only the heathen. The Catholics and Democrats Will be here still breathin’. “These will all cook In the seven-year stew, The sinners and all Who don’t believe like we do. “The Antichrist evil Will take over the planet. He’ll be more ungodly Than all others who ran it! “And just when it looks like The Beast will succeed, Down will come Jesus On his white battle steed! “He’ll jump the Beast’s armies Like stink on a monkey. God’s foes will admit It’s about to get funky. “Arms, legs and heads, Guts and blood will be flyin’! It’s there in the Bible; It’s true! I’m not lyin’!” Suddenly his ranting Did come to a stop. His eyes grew like saucers, And his heart skipped a hop. For outside the church, A racket ensued. The congregation did ...

You have to shake your head in pity. Green is disturbed over the fact that I left Full Preterism. Of course, he will brush this off with his usual, “I was just being facetious”. But, there is something else going on there. Here’s his latest: Phil Naessens: When you final realized that what you were actively promoting was possibly damnable heresy, what was your first reaction, and how did you tell your family and those closest to you that what you so actively promoted was wrong? Sam Frost: “It was one of repentance. . . . My colleagues, the closest ones around me, Jason Bradfield has since left and then there’s been about 25 others that have left.” ———————– “In Talbot shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order: Sam the firstfruits; afterward Jason Bradfield. Then cometh 25 others.” Surely people can see something very, very bizarre here. Green’s man obsession with Talbot has to be questioned. He can’t write a post without mentioning his name. What’s “amusing” about that? I don’t find this amusing. I find it disturbing. Green’s man love for Talbot should disturb others as well. Maybe he has a thing for beards. I don’t know.

Apparently, Ed Hassertt has returned to the faith-destroying framework known as hyperpreterism. Recall my initial response to Ed Hassertt’s denial of hyperpreterism: (July 31, 2011) Ed, i was probably one of the first to read your email, but i wanted to take a day or two to respond. To be completely honest with you, i had mixed feelings. On one hand, i was excited about the possibility that another person is leaving the dangerous teachings of full preterism. On the other hand, i was a little skeptical about all this, considering similar past actions and also the emotions you recently displayed in light of your book not selling well. I hope me saying that doesn’t upset you…i’m just being honest with you. I don’t want to be a fake on here and tell you what i think you want to hear. The very first thought that crossed my mind after reading your email was, “ok…is this going to be another one of those episodes where all this reconciliation and stuff go out the window a day or two later?” Surely, you can understand why i would think that. But, i also believe in a powerful, sovereign Lord who is able to change the hearts of men. I know He did mine. If this is in fact genuine, it is certainly not beyond His ability to perform and i don’t want to be guilty of doubting God. I know that when i left full preterism, there were a number of people ...

Some site owners, especially on Ning, want to copy and paste content that is unique to this site on their site in order to spark conversation. We ask that you do NOT copy and paste ENTIRE articles, but instead copy a sentence or two and then link to the full article here. There are many reasons why we ask this to be done. One obvious reason is that it defeats the whole point in having a site to begin with. If our content can be accessed elsewhere, then we lose traffic. Another reason: it’s stealing. I realize that some of you may have asked for permission in the past and have been told different things, by Sam or even myself. However, Sam and i have chatted about this today and are now on the same page. Websites that are found copying and pasting entire articles from here will be contacted and asked to remove the material. If that is not honored, I will go to the next step of reporting the site to the site host, as well as reporting the site as “spam” to Google.
I question often, in prayer and in reflection, how I am to Full Preterism. I wrote in my last book as a Full Preterist: In scholarship, one learns to always entertain a bit of skepticism in the back of their mind. That is what, I believe, makes for good position papers. There are “problems” with preterism, no doubt, and I wrote about this quite extensively in my first book, Misplaced Hope. However, as Reformed philosopher Gordon Clark noted, no system is perfect or omniscient since no system can answer every question that it raises. Preterism is a system, and as such seeks to correct contradictions and problems of the previous systems of eschatology, whether they are amillennial, postmillennial or premillennial. I can say, confidently, that WSTTB did not deflate preterism, although it does raise issues that preterist theology must deal with in the future. Chapter after chapter I came away more enthused for our position than ever, realizing that it was either preterism or an ambiguous hodge-podge of “already/not yet” paradoxical statements which is represented in WSTTB.” (House Divided). What is interesting here is that even then I was constantly going back over my work. At the time I wrote this (2007 or somewhere arund there), “problems” were already cropping up. The problems in WSTTB? raised “problems” that would have to be dealt with in the future. But, note how I framed the “futurist” position: an ambiguous hodge podge of paradoxical statements. What was I doing there? Why did I say that? I’ll tell ...

Max King was, without a doubt, my first real foray into the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead. Up to that time in Bible College, and, just growing up in the Church, I “heard” the usual, traditional doctrine of resurrection of bodies at the end of the world. “Glorified bodies” and the like. The discussion would usually turn to “when” rather than “how”. In my Postmillennial days leading up to King, the doctrine was not talked about a great deal. It was assumed. In Postmillennialism, a great deal of time was spent on showing how AD 70 was the “great tribulation”. Well, needless to say, when I read King and began a relationship with him and his son, Tim, there were some things pointed out to me that just didn’t sit right with where my mind was at the time: 1. Consistency. 2. Resurrection is connected with AD 70. “Yeah, right, how do they separate resurrection from the “time of the end”?” Isn’t that inconsistent? And off I went. Stayed there for about 19 years. Even wrote a book on it, Exegetical Essays on the Resurrection of the Dead, now published by Don Preston. While pastoring, we developed a CD set on I Corinthians 15. That sold really well. When one comes out of a view that they had tenaciously defended, it causes a psychological headspin. That I would ever defend the orthodox view of resurrection was an impossibilty. I thought King had utterly demolished it. Well, he did ...

November 1st, 2011 has been a highly anticipated day for theologically-driven hiphop heads. Two great albums were released today: The Attributes of God by shai linne and The Ephesians Project by ChristCentric. To add to that, Timothy Brindle makes an appearance on both. Tim is no doubt one of my top five rappers, who released one of my favorite projects back in ’02 entitled The Great Awakening. Tim was admonished by his wife, pastor, and fellow artists to step back from hip-hop ministry in late 2005 to deal with his personal and marital struggles. After weekly encouragement of Gospel-centered preaching, close pastoral shepherding and biblical counseling from the elders of Christ Redemption Fellowship (PCA), Tim announced his ‘return’ earlier this year. I’ll let shai explain the purpose of his album: As I looked around at what has been going on in Christian music lately, I noticed that a lot of it is more about us than about God. Don’t get me wrong, there are many songs that make references to God and speak about the implications of the gospel, which is great. But a lot of it is not actually about God himself. The main subject of most of the Christian songs I hear is usually something other than God. That’s problematic on a number of levels. As the time came to do another record, I was studying Exodus 33-34, and I noticed that when Moses asked to see God’s glory (Ex. 33:18), God responded by describing his character. Jesus says in ...

Terry has been a “Facebook Friend” for years. In fact, at one point Terry invited me to his ning site and asked that i contribute to it. He wrote, Hello Jason. I know your a great preterist writer lol. I just added a preterist network to my web site and I would love to have you as member there as will. Hope you can join us. So i did. Thanks for join Jason. I am really looking forward to any input you have. I love reading what you write. Fast forward: I deactivated FB for awhile and then recently reactivated it, to find some of the old “friends” still intact, including Terry. This past Saturday, Terry wrote a piece in which he examines Jesus’ use of “clouds”, in reference to his coming. Now, having been a hyperpreterist for seven years and having recorded a 1.5 to 2 hour lecture on Acts 1.11, i could easily predict what Terry was going to argue and how. The argument basically goes something like this…(1) highlight a few passages in the OT where “clouds” are being spoken of in some sort of “metaphorical” way, (2) appeal to the principle of analogia fidei (analogy of faith), and then (3) argue that “consistency demands” that the clouds mentioned in the verse in question means the same thing it meant in all these other passages. There are a number of problems with this line of reasoning. And i was hoping to engage Terry on the problems and ...

This is from the wonderful book, Dictionary of Latin and Greek Theological Terms: Drawn Principally from Protestant and Scholastic Theology (Baker, 1985). Richard A. Muller has done Christianity a great service. I have quoted him before in my articles on “infinity”, but want to quote the entire passage under the entry: infinitas. infinitas: infinitude; especially, the infinitas essentiae Dei, or infinitude of the divine essence. By infinitas Dei the scholastics understand the limitlessness of the divine essence with the regard to two species in particular: aeternitas, or eternity, and immensitas. The divine infinitas can also be described negatively and positively. It is not an infinity of corporeal quantity or extension but rather an infinity defined by the absence of limit; positively it is an infinite superiority over all things. In addition this infinitas Dei or infinitas essentiae ought not to be viewed as an isolated attribute but as a property of the divine essence that extends to each and every one of the divine attributes, so that divine knowledge or scientia is omniscientia and the divine potentia, omnipotentia, and so forth. Now, Muller here has completely stated our case against the denial of Full Preterism and its insistence on history “never ending”. When “infinity” is applied to God, it is “NOT” a quantity or extension (Process Theology), but rather the “absence of limit”. That is, nothing limits God in his abilities, i.e., created things. Nothing denies him absolute knowledge (of ALL things). Nothing can limit his power (save His own ...

For the philosophic problem of the knowledge of God, for the construction of a theology, and as well for religious stability, a view of the Bible as revelation is most important. Currently many authors both in Europe and America are trying to meet the need. In the December 24, 1962, issue of The Presbyterian Outlook, four southern professors join forces to propagate a particular view. The four are: Dr. Kenneth J. Foreman, Professor Emeritus of Doctrinal Theology at Louisville Presbyterian Seminary; Dr. James H. Gailey, Jr., Professor of Old Testament at Columbia Seminary; Dr. James L. Mays, Professor of Biblical Interpretation at Union Seminary (Virginia); and Dr. John F. Iansen, Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Austin Presbyterian Seminary. They write under the general title “Do We Need an Infallible Bible?” The four articles are part of the widespread contemporary attack on the truthfulness of the Bible. It is instructive to see how their arguments are constructed. Dr. Foreman, in the first article, addresses himself mainly to the question of the (alleged) need of an infallible Bible. He asks, “Do I need an infallible Bible to convict me of sin?”In all plausibility the answer is No. Of course, a man may be convicted of sin without ever having seen a Bible; he may simply hear an evangelist and the Holy Spirit may convict him. Such a consideration indicates that the initial question is not quite the correct question to ask if we are interested in the truthfulness of the Bible. ...

Astronomers have captured the first direct image of a planet being born. Adam Kraus, of the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy, said the planet is being formed out of dust and gas circling a 2-milion-year-old star about 450 light years from Earth. The planet itself, based on scientific models of how planets form, is estimated to have started taking shape about 50,000 to 100,000 years ago. Called LkCa 15 b, it’s the youngest planet ever observed. The previous record holder was about five times older. Kraus and his colleague, Michael Ireland from Macquarie University and the Australian Astronomical Observatory, used Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea to find the planet. “We’re catching this object at the perfect time. We see this young star, it has a disc around it that planets are probably forming out of and we see something right in the middle of a gap in the disc,” Kraus said in a telephone interview. Kraus presented the discovery Wednesday at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Kraus and Ireland’s research paper on the discovery is due to appear in The Astrophysical Journal. Observing planets while they’re forming can help scientists answer questions like whether planets form early in the life of a star or later, and whether they form relatively close to stars or farther away. Planets can change orbits after forming, so it’s difficult to answer such questions by studying older planets. “These very basic questions of when and where are best answered when you can ...

John Scargy has written a piece that ought to cause one’s jaw to drop to floor. Scargy is a “Full Preterist” by the way, who also claims to be “Reformed.” Yet, a Church of Christ gentlman, Jeff Vaughn, had to point out what the Westminster Confession of Faith states. To which, scargy replies, “Have to say this is one of the most hideous views i have seen from the fundamentalist.” First, Scargy writes, ” I have been having a hard time finding any historic writings or inspired for that matter on what seems to be the latest futurist scheme thrown against the wall. Surely if this is a biblical doctrine it should have been written about by the early church fathers or easily found in scripture. What Church or denomination has it as part of their statement of faith? I’m especially interested how this will all play out…will it be instantaneous or will it happen gradually? Will just men become sterile or women also? These are critical questions that deserved to be answered by those promoting such a view and if they are unable then maybe they should go back to the drawing board. The more you think about it the scarier it sounds and makes the Left Behind stories look like a Disney movie. If it is as i expect a NEW invention then it’s obviously newer then the Corporate Body View.” Can you believe this? The Church has constantly and consistently taught an end to history: “they shall ...

Eccl 1.10 states, “Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already, in the ages before us.” “Ages before us.” Rom 16.25 says, “Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages.” “But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glorification” (1Co 2.7). So far we have “ages long ago” (previous to the writer of Eccl), and “before the ages” – before time and creation. “Ages” starts with creation: “In the distant past I was fashioned, At the beginning, at the origin of earth” (Prov 8.23). Then, when we get to Paul, there were “long ages” before his time. He wrote, again: “and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things” (Eph 3.9). Creation. Ages. “The mystery which hath been hidden from ages and generations, but now is manifested to his saints” (Col 1.26). Ages and “generations” appear to go together as well. “To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen” (ITim 1.17). Jesus is the King of the ages. From first to last (Isa 41.4). So, we have ages, which clearly end (else, why have ages, plural?). One comes, another one ...

Mike Bull has recently sent me his new book, The Bible Matrix II: The Covenant Key (Westbow Press, 2011). Like his Bible Matrix, this one is full of “patterns”. Did you ever think that Esther, probably one of the most neglected books in the Bible, was covenantal in structure and outline? That it speaks directly to us? Get ahold of Bull’s “key” and you will. Bull takes the most basic and fundamental structure from one Ray Sutton. You may have heard me from time to time mention Sutton, Jordan, Chilton, Gentry, DeMar and Grant – the Tyler, Texas gang funded by Gary North back in the late eighties and early ninties. I cut my teeth on these men. Sutton is currently Bishop of the Church of Holy Communion in the Reformed Episcopal Church (REC). As an aside, my family has recently joined an Anglican Province of America (APA) body which has established “intercommunion” with REC. Our Bishop knows Sutton. Weird how God brings things around like that. Sutton is no longer a “theonomist” in the strict sense of the word. Nonetheless, his “covenant outline” has survived. If you don’t remember it, it is: 1. Transcendence 2. Hierarchy 3. Ethics 4. Sanctions 5. Inheritance Or, to put it into everyday speak: 1. Who’s in charge here? 2. To Whom do I report? 3. What are my orders? 4. What do I get if I obey or disobey? 5. Does this outfit have a future? Now, this structure, if you will, further ...

On Sovereign Grace Preterism, Christian Ortiz posted this article from his Pastor: http://www.thevillagechurch.net/mediafiles/didjesusalreadycomeback.pdf James Metzger posted as response as well. The pastor’s response is actually pretty solid, laying out the basic differences. The major point at which scholars would disagree is concerning, From the surrounding context, we can see that Jesus’ reference to “this generation” was not specifically aimed toward His 1st century hearers, but rather toward those who “see all these things.” What things? The things which He has just described as signs of His coming: tribulation, the abomination which causes desolation, false prophets, severe astrological anomalies, etc. Therefore, it is clear that Jesus is not saying “you who hear this will not pass away before all is completed,” but rather “the generation which sees these signs will also see My coming.” Scholarship is pretty unified on the fact that (in its final canonical form) the early Olivet tradition (Mark with Matthew’s additions) envisions the destruction of Jerusalem as consequent with the beginning of the “great woes” that accompany the final consummation (including resurrection, judgement, etc.). Luke, probably (consensus view) writing after the fall of Jerusalem, more distinctly separates the events for his audience, since the parousia did not coincide with the temple’s destruction. (For the complex history on the theories concerning the composition and interpretation of the Mark’s “little apocalypse”, see particularly Beasley-Murray, Jesus and the Future.) But the rest of the paper is well constructed, highlighting issues like the nature of the resurrection and consummation, echoing contemporaneous ...

It’s good to see ideas that overthrow Full Preterism finally make their way through other voices. Partial Preterists have not been so articulate in the past. I am not a “partial” Preterist. Just a “Preterist”. “Partial” was an adjective we came up with to designate the Mathison’s, Gentry’s and Leithart’s. It’s not a bad moniker. We need them to distinguish one nuanced view from another – especially when there are so many shared or agreed upon propositions between the views. It’s the differences that make the difference! Recently, I have come to know William Amarquaye on Facebook. He is a “Clarkian” (someone who reads and likes Christian Philosopher, Gordon H. Clark). William posted an article concerning “infinity” over on Death is Defeated website (http://deathisdefeated.ning.com/profiles/blogs/full-preterism-and-the-problem-of-infinity?xg_source=activity) and the conversation has been revealing. Former Full Preterist Ken Palmer has chimed in as well, holding his own. The usual class of neo-Full Preterists (Covenant Creationists) showed up for comment, and it is here that I would like to point out some things that have been said. Doug Wilkinson, who ardently opposes anything Calvinistic (as well as Allyn Morton), wrote, “Sam’s problem, in my opinion, was that he started to realize that preterism was revealing genetic weaknesses in Reformed theology and he decided he’d rather be a Calvinist than a preterist. I don’t think it’s anymore complicated than that. The infinity thing is an excuse for an exit strategy.” Partially correct. Yes, Reformed Theology, proper, is NOT compatible with Full Preterism. A growing number of ...

Since Dave Green and I have been carrying on the conversation about Infinity, and since Green is once again backpeddling (he used to say it was a “paradox” – he now, suddenly, denies that it is a paradox), then I will respond in short. Green recently wrote, ” “Actual infinity,”which is a technical term, and which was the whole Talbotian basis for Sam’s departure from preterism, is not “infinity” in the sense of “an endlessly increasing series.” It is not “infinity” like the digits of Pi, or like the digits of two-thirds in decimal form (.6666, etc.). “Actual infinity” is, again, a complete set of infinite entities. If something is being ADDED TO a set of entities, then the set is, by definition, not “actual infinity.” We cannot “add one more” to “actual infinity.” If we’re “forever adding one more,” then the set is forever finite, no matter how numerous the entities in the set become in time. An ever-increasing-in-time set, therefore, being less than (

If you have been following the recent exchanges between me and Full Preterist teacher, Dave Green (along with a few others, namely, on this site, former Full Preterist, Sharon Nichols) then you will have seen where Mr. Green finally admits that Full Preterism cannot have any notion whatsoever of an “end of history” or, what I like to call, an end to “procreation”. I haved used this term while I was a Full Preterist, and continue to use it: infinite procreation. By that, what I mean, so that my definitions are quite clear, is that history is made by people. Generations (think, generating) make history what it is. Without generating human beings (procreating), history cannot continue. Thus, if history never ends (using the word, “never”, in a strictly logical sense), then procreation never ends. The term, “infinite”, is, then, to be taken in the sense of the Greek to apeiron: the never-ending; the incomplete; that to which another can always be added (see, Liddell and Scott Greek-English Lexicon, in loc.). Now, I am not forcing a definition here, then building a straw-man. Green means exactly the definition given above. Procreation will never cease. If you think of one birth ten-thousand years from now, think of another one, and so on ad infinitum. Green has recently discovered this, along with Full Preterist teacher, author, lecturer, Larry Siegle (and friend), who apparently agrees with Green. Let me quote from these two sources. First, Dave Green writes, “The only thing that makes the ...

Well, since we have done I Corinthians 15, in spite of the fact that some of my critics continue to insist that I have provided no exegesis since I have left Full Preterism, let’s move on to consider I Thessalonians 4. It shoudn’t be that hard. Here’s the English Standard: But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord,1 that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words. Here is Young’s Literal: And I do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, that ye may not sorrow, as also the rest who have not hope, ...

A funny thing happened on the way to our former website, Sovereign Grace Preterism (now admined by Michael “we sin in heaven” Bennett). Sovereign Grace Preterism was once ran by Jason Bradfield (former Full Preterist) and I was once an admin (former Full Preterist, still ongoing idiot). Traffic has not been the same on the site since we left (since around January, February), but I still make the rounds to the “major” and active sites. These are Sovereign Grace “Gospel is” Preterism, Preterist “we sin in heaven” Cosmos, Death is “spiritually” Defeated “only”. Covenant Preterism (Ken Palmer) was a Full Preterist site, but he came to his senses recently and returned to orthodoxy. Two of the authors of House Divided (myself and Ed Hassertt) denounced Full Preterism (Mike Sullivan and Dave Green were the other two authors who run Preterist “we sin forever” Cosmos). Now, we Full Preterists play a trick by showing how “divided” the “futurist” community is and reason that they are divided because, well, they are not as enlightened as we Full Preterists are. However, this trick no longer works. Michael Bennett posted an article (here) and a response to it was written by Brock Hollett: “1. bodies not spirits “sleep in the dust”. 2. The Greek semantic field for “soul” indicates bodies not spirits. 3. every biblical passage concerning resurrection specifically speaks of bodies not spirits. 4. The “rest of the dead” “came to life”, indicating much more than changing locations from Hades to heaven. 5. Good ...

I will use five works in this post: Milton Terry (Biblical Apocalyptics); David E. Aune (Word Biblical Commentary, Volume 52c, Revelation 17-22); David Chilton (Days of Vengeance); G. K. Beale (NIGTC The Book of Revelation) and J. S. Russell (The Parousia). That Russell shuffles around Rev 20 is to be noted. For exampe, vv. 1-3 as within the time of the fall of Judaism. Vv.4-6 fall within the time of reigning with Christ now. Vv.7-10 is at the virtual end of time and history as we know it (Russell was not a Full Preterist). Finally, vv.11-15 is the judgment solely of the wicked upon at the fall of Judaism. There is nothing entirely inconsistent with Russell’s approach. It is a notorious debate in commentaries as to what “And I saw” constitutes in terms of sequence and chronology. It could represent a new vision, or it could be sequential with the previous vision. In Rev 20 alone “and I saw” occurs 5 times. Theoretically, then, there could be five divisions here which may or may not follow a sequential or chronological order (Beale, in dealing with the phrase, concurs that it does not automatically mean “historical order” – 317). The Book is divided into three “times” if you will: “what you have seen, what is, and what must be after these things” (1.19). John, at the time of writing to the Churches this vision has already seen the vision. He is recounting in chapter 1 what had happned to him, where he ...

I have not read much John Piper. Jason Bradfield has, but I have not. Anyhow, I was doing some late-night googling (that doesn’t sound right….) in the “impersonal human nature of Christ” (anhypostasis) and found this article on Piper’s website written by David Mathis (here). Very well written. I am relooking at some aspects in the Trinity, particularly the Human Nature of Christ, and how Full Preterism, of necessity, redefines our Christian tradition in light of its insistence that Jesus no longer retains a human form or body (as we used to mock, a “six foot Jesus”). The “bodily return” of the LORD is a deduction made in traditional eschatology not on the basis of literalizing “return”, “coming”, “appearance” or “see him” passages (many of which can be applied to AD 70), but upon the fact that the Bible teaches, and orthodoxy confirms that the Human Jesus retains His Human Body in glory (glorification). Hence, we truly shall “see” Jesus as the Apostle Paul saw him three years after His Resurrection, and as John saw him decades after His Resurrection (and as Stephen saw him, standing at the right hand of God - standing because he was receiving Stephen into his parousia. When one “sits” and a guest arrives, one stands in order to greet their guest). Now, this being the case, I continued to search Piper’s site for “glorification” – just for looking. But, then I ran across this little gem, which I have concluded awhile ago, but never really brought it ...

There is no question that today’s Rehabilitation Centers, Alcoholics Anonymous groups, and Christian Counseling aims are rooted in the idea of “freewill”. It’s everywhere in the literature I have collected over the years. For example, in The Twelve Steps for Christians, (RPI Publishing, 1994), it is flat out stated, “God has given us freewill” (xxvii). In Alcoholics Anonymous it is assumed that the will is “free” in terms of choice. One has to be “willing” or have “willingness” in order for the “program” to work. However, there is an interesting dilemma here in A.A. literature. Step One states that alcoholics must “admit” that they are “powerless” over alcohol. Critics of A.A. are not short in pointing this out, for they assume “freewill” as well. There is also another curious aspect found in the A.A. book. In relating to the wives of heavy drinkers, Bill Wilson wrote, “God has either removed your husband’s liquor problem or He has not” (A.A., 120). In one of the most often quoted sections of the “stories” in Alcoholics Anonymous (3rd Edition) we find, “And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing, or situation-some fact of my life -unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake” (449). Leans a ...

It’s not secret the Full Preterist and HyperPreterist base their entire theology on the “time texts”. Recently, I tried to have a conversation with one, and that’s all I got back: time texts! It’s the end all be all of Full Preterism. The problem, though, is what they do with them. They cram the rest of theology through them and come out the other side with extremely bizarre notions. These bizarre notions are then accepted because, well, that’s what the time texts mean, and so we have “to go where the Bible leads”, right? Well, yes, of course, we have to go where the WHOLE Bible lead, and there are lot more verses in the Bible than just these: 101 Preterist Time-Indicators for the Second Coming of Christ 1. “The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” (Matt. 3:2) 2. “Who warned you to flee from the wrath about to come?” (Matt. 3:7) 3. “The axe is already laid at the root of the trees.” (Matt. 3:10) 4. “His winnowing fork is in His hand.” (Matt. 3:12) 5. “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matt. 4:17) 6. “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matt. 10:7) 7. “You shall not finish going through the cities of Israel, until the Son of Man comes.” (Matt. 10:23) 8. “…the age about to come.” (Matt. 12:32) 9. “The Son of Man is about to come in the glory of His Father with His angels; and will then recompense every man according to his ...

Source – Every variety of tyranny rests upon the belief that some persons have a right — or even a duty — to impose their wills upon other people. Tyranny may be fastened upon others by the mere whim of one man, such as a king or dictator under various names. Or tyranny may be imposed upon a minority “for their own good” by a democratically elected majority. But in any case, tyranny is always a denial — or a misunderstanding — of the mandates of an authority or law higher than man himself. Liberty rests upon the belief that all proper authority for man’s relationships with his fellow men comes from a source higher than man — from the Creator. Liberty decrees that all men — subject and ruler alike — are bound by this higher authority which is above and beyond man-made law; that each person has a relation to his Maker with which no other person, not even the ruler, has any right to interfere. In order to make these conceptions effective for liberty, they must be deeply ingrained in the fundamental values of a people. That is to say, they must be part of the popular religion. There was one people of antiquity for whom this was true, the people who gave us our Old Testament. It was among the ancient Israelites that the conviction took hold and emerged into practice that there was a God of righteousness whose judgments applied even to rulers. No Royal ...

Some brief thoughts. First we have Exodus/Passover, and this is re-enacted in the events of Christ from the “enslaving” power of sin and death. There was a “forty year” period for Israel from enslavement to Canaan. We are told in Hebrews that Canaan is a “type” of the “better country” – Heaven itself. Jesus has now granted his people from Adam onward “entrance” into Heaven upon death. The kingdom is at hand, literally, at arm’s length. It’s here. The New Jerusalem is depicted in light of the Solomonic epitome of Israel’s glory. The surrounding “nations” come to Jerusalem, and there was “peace on all sides”. Jesus, the “son of David” (Solomon) has come and set up New Jerusalem in the “better country.” However, Canaan and the setting up of the kingdom of Israel did not end with this. Rather, Solomon’s reign showed the bowing of the surrounding nations. If Canaan was a type of “heaven”, then what is the anti-type of the surrounding nations? Earth. The same can be said of the Edenic narrative (Jordan, Fesko, Beale). The land of the Eden and the Garden of Eden was meant to expand. Jordan writes, “God placed within the earth and image of heaven (Gn 1.8). This by itself is sufficient to show that the world is supposed to be brought into conformity with the heavenly model…Man was to “subdue” the earth. Was the earth in revolt? No. Then what does “subdue” mean? In context it means that man is to take ...

Interesting how things play out. I blogged about the inadequacy of Frank Viola’s book, Pagan Christianity. The hyper-preterist website, Death Is Deafeated, did not fail to leap (see here). Greg Boyd, the Open Theist (God does not know the future) advocate, argues that Constantine “baaaddd” (Frankenstein voice). Another hyper-preterist, Doug Wilkinson chimes in, “hey, ya’ll ought to read Pagan Christianity.” Hyper-preterism, Pagan Christianity, Open Theism…… However, I had posted in Andrew Perriman’s website here and was “confronted” by a few hyper-prets. Perriman has not responded (for whatever reason, who knows, and I won’t make any suggestions as to why, because I don’t have any). Anyhow, Perriman wrote an excellent book The Coming of the Son of Man: New Testament Eschatology for an Emerging Church (Paternoster, 2005), which I bought from Don Preston’s book table at Alan Bondar’s conference in Ft. Myers (my last Full Preterist conference lecture). Perriman is not a Full Preterist. I am more in line with his view (and Wright’s, Beale’s, and Jordan’s). However, Perriman wrote a blog way back on Peter Leithart’s book, Defending Constantine (IVP, 2010). It was a favorable review (here). Perriman writes, “I am increasingly coming to the view that a narrative-historical reading of the New Testament will sooner or later be seen to have significant implications for how we understand the transition that the church made in the fourth century from persecuted minority to privileged imperial religion. For the most part, theological opinion today holds that Constantinianism was at best a regrettable compromise and ...

If you have listened to the Sam Frost Show on Preterist Radio, you may have heard Mike and I talk about A.A. and such. I was hesitant to write anything on it, basically from fear of what “others” might say or infer. And, so, here goes. For the Christian, A.A. poses a problem. There are books (Alcoholics Anonymous: Cult or Cure? Charles Bufe source), and websites (Orange Papers, Worldview, etc) devoted to showing that it is, in fact, a cult. However, there are several Christian organizations and researchers that show that it is not a cult (DickB., Silkworth, etc). My own research (which has resulted in a as-yet published book) comes somewhere in the middle. I am somewhat involved with A.A. and certainly notice that many within A.A. can take the organization itself religiously. However, I have done considerable research into the history of A.A. (reading all the primary sources of founders Bill Wilson and Bob Smith), and early pioneering members (1935-1939). I have also found a considerable number of Christian counsellors who accept the “disease model” of addiction, over and against the “mental model”. However, recently, I have come across Ed Welch and his book, Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave (Presbyterian and Reformed, 2001) which, I think, captures the earliest intent of what the founders of A.A. were trying to get at. Disease is a metaphor for the enslaving power of sin. Welch: “…sin feels exactly like a disease. It feels as if something outside ourselves has taken ...

I have finished re-reading Frank Viola’s book, Pagan Christianity, and I must say, “whew…glad that mindless waste of time is over!” Viola’s sources for his “anti-church” view are mostly liberals. Take Will Durant, for example. Durant was an adamant anti-Christian, and agnostic. Yet, this is one of Viola’s sources. What is NOT quoted in the study of the origins of Church order and liturgy (Liturgics), are scholars like Gregory Dix, Alexander Schmemann, Cullman, Duchesne, Dugmore and Freeman (and others). For example, in Schmemann (Introduction to Liturgical Theology – St. Vladmir’s Seminary Press, 1986), we read, “No matter what disagreement may exist between historians of the Christian cult, they all agree on the acceptance of the genetical link between this cult and the liturgical tradition of Judaism as it existed in that period. The study and evaluation of this link has been hindered for a long time by a myth which has been central in liberal theology, the myth of the rebirth of the Church under the influence of the Hellenistic world. According to this myth, the organized catholic Church, as we see from the middle of the second century on, with her doctrine, worship and discipline, was separated from her Hebrew beginnings, and was the fruit of the Hellenistic metamorphosis which the original teaching of Christ underwent, it is said, some time prior to the Church’s emergence as an organized structure” (53,54). And, again, in academic study, “…we may assume that this Hellenistic myth in its pure form has finally ...

Full Preterist Ward Fenley has recently (I assume by the date on the post) written a paper on the afterlife here. I must say, it is one of the finer attempts at dealing with his issue from a Full Preterist perspective (and very rare that Full Preterists deal with this issue at all). Fenley is plainly arguing against some fellow Full Preterists who have argued for complete annihilation after death. We have brought the problem to the front in that, if there is an “afterlife” (conscious eternal existence), then what would that “look like”? How would it differ from our present experience? To add to the problem, saying that “all things are fulfilled” and fully and entirely “apply” to us today, would seem to contradict the notion that the afterlife contains a “better existence: one free, literally, from pain, weeping, sin, evil, etc. That “seeing” God in the “face” of Jesus Christ would be different as well. Sure, in certain places, the Bible uses “face” in a metaphorical sense, but, in the afterlife, will we literally percieve or “see” Jesus of Nazareth “face to face”? We will see Abraham, Moses and C.H. Spurgeon? Fenley attempts to tackle these questions. First, I believe, he recognizes the problem. Full Preterism must give an answer to this queston. In fact, Fenley states, “The question remains: If we have all of this now, how does this translate into a proper view of “the afterlife”? (Hereafter this term will refer to consciousness after physical expiration.) ...

Here’s an article at length from an Atheist website: “This cross is an admittedly religious symbol. Those who want it publicly displayed in the proposed national shrine have stated that this cross demonstrates to Christians, and everyone else, that god did not abandon us on 9/11. How such a symbol might be viewed, or how it might affect non-believers, has been irrelevant to those who hold it to be a gift of a god: a god that still has us favorably in mind, despite his apparent inability, or unwillingness, to prevent the evil that happened that terrible day. Those who would have this cross installed in our national memorial and museum want to give the impression to the world that the United States of America is a Christian nation. And they want our government to ratify that unconstitutional conclusion by bringing this Trojan Horse of Christianity inside the gates of the constitutional wall that separates religion from government. The “cross” as discovered in the rubble of the basement of WTC-6 (not the towers). Be clear on this please. We are not a Christian nation and we have never been a Christian nation. The Treaty with Tripoli, of 1797, signed by all of the U.S. senators, says, in black letter, “…the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.” We are a secular nation that has a lot of Christians in it.
Why do Christians still die? That is, if one of the penalties of Adam was physical death, and Christ has cancelled all penalties, then why do Christians still suffer under this penalty? It is an age old question. I began this study with a main text, Cruciformity: Paul’s Narrative Spirituality of the Cross, written by Michael J. Gorman. There, all of the verses dealing with Paul’s suffering (and the suffering of the Church) are listed and expounded upon. When massed together like this, it is plain that Paul’s suffering (and the suffering, or “c0-suffering”, of the Church) was physical. Paul was in physical pain. He suffered physically. These sufferings Paul referred to as “weaknesses”. And, in these weaknesses (even to the point of death), Christ’s strength is “made strong.” The suffering of Paul and the Apostles were not unique to them alone. They are characteristic of the “persecuted church”. Some in the church suffer for the faith more than others. Some in the last 200o years have paid the full price: martyrdom. They are rewarded as such. Yet, as Gorman relates, all suffering, even if illness, or loss, or poverty, or, for all of us, eventual death, is “weakness” through which Christ is made strong. Paul wrote, “if we co-suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him.” Suffering and dying, whether for the sake of the Gospel through direct persecution, or suffering in general with ill health, disability and eventual death, is not “something that just ...

RCM has been dismantling Full Preterism for over a year now. It is clear from the general state of things that this has caused some within that group to control the damage. But, the damage has been done. When a person is involved as much as many of us were, there are “blinders” that are on. The FP uses this against “Futurists”. “They can’t see Full Preterism because they are blind to traditions.” One member of this increasing “cult” (of which not all FP treat it as a cult, but some of them do to the point that to deny FP is akin to denying God Himself) recently wrote about it is a special “grace” that God brings that enables “them” to “see” Full Preterism. Being a Full Preterist, by some, is a “gift” from God. This is not far from “intiates” who “only” understand the Bible through the understanding of “revelation” given to them that the rest of the Church (which is blind) does not have. This is Danger Number 1. It is, of course, true that “faith” in Jesus Christ (salvation) requires the work of the Spirit upon those whom God has called. But, to say that a particular doctrine of a particular group with a particular eschatology requires a secret “insight” that others are not “blessed with” is, well, kind of loopy. Whatever happened to simply studying and coming to conclusions? Danger Number 2: Revisionism of history. One FP recently wrote, “We are beginning to see AD ...

Dave Curtis, a Full Preterist (and friend), wrote, “Unless Jesus’ body had been resurrected, His disciples would have had no assurance that His soul had been to Hades and had been resurrected. The physical resurrection of Christ was essential to verify the spiritual to which it was tied. While the physical resurrection of our bodies would have no point since we will not continue living on this planet, breathing earth’s oxygen and eating earth’s food, after we die physically.” This is a typical Full Preterist argument. According to Curtis, Jesus’ resurrection of the body served only one purpose: “verification.” It was, in and of itself, non-salvific. The only aspect of salvation entailed in His resurrection was His coming out of sheol in his spirit. That’s it. But, then notice that Curtis states that the resurrection of our bodies would serve no purpose (anymore than Jesus’ did) since we will not live eternal on this planet, breathing in the elements of the air required for a physical body. As I have pointed out, this otherwise on-the-surface argument runs right into the problem of the resurrection of Jesus’ body and his ascension, and his glorification. See, if Jesus’ incarnate body was glorified and ascended and remains in heaven (as per His Human Nature), then, obviously, “breathing air” and the like falls to te ground as an objection against our bodies being raised. Full Preterists, like any good hitman, have to “get rid of the body” of Jesus because it counters their objections ...

Originally, i got interested in hiphop because of the beats. Later, i came to see the awesome potential rap has in being able to express theological concepts. You can rattle off an entire sermon in a rap. And some artists do. (Shai Linne, Timothy Brindle, ChristCentric, and so on) Today, Braille released Native Lungs. I try not to flood RCM with hiphop vids, since many don’t like the genre; but after listening to a couple of songs, i couldn’t help it. Two songs stuck out big time for me: Deep Rest and Death In Me. It’s great that i can listen to this and just sit back and bob my head. Two years ago i would have been itching to write a “critique” of Braille’s futurism, telling him how wrong he is. Glad those days are over. I guess that is why these two songs in particular really hit home for me today. You’ll understand when you listen to them. You can download the entire album HERE for free. Here are the videos for those two songs, complete with song and background. I really like Odd Thomas’ verse (third verse) on Death In Me. Lyrics inspired by Spurgeon. Also, see if you can catch all the metal/hard rock band names on Theory Hazit’s verse in Death In Me (first verse). Enjoy!

As we pointed out in Christian theology concerning the glorified body of Christ, and that, based upon the Scriptures, the early church unanimously rejected (against the Gnostics, Neo-Platonists, and Platonists) that, although the soul is the man (person), his body is integral to the overall definition of man. The reason they conclude this is simply based on the testimony of Scripture in the life of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus did not, indeed, could not take upon himself human nature without assuming “flesh” through the birth of his mother Mary, “according to the flesh”. Thus, by definition, man cannot be man without a body. This is true in another instance of the rejection of Platonism found in that view’s idea of pre-existence of souls. “Soul” in that view is the end all be all of all that makes a human, human. The body is simply a temporary “prison house” from which to escape. In a conversation I had with a Full Preterist the other day, that is essentially his view: the reason why we sin and do not manifest the full salvation of God which, he believes, they now entirely possess in every way (since there is no more to come), is simply because A. They live on earth, and B. they still have a physical body. This was the answer given when asked if the Full Preterist view of the afterlife means that pain, sorrow, sin, and evil will be done away with, and if we ...

Recently, Ken Palmer, a one time vocal supporter of Full Preterism, has recently announced: “Although I have been vocal about my views at this time, I wanted to publish a blog publicly notating the change of my personal doctrinal statement. In the last few months I have been in depth into the studies of Full Preterism, and have come to the conclusion, based on Max King and others during the 1970′s and 80′s Full Preterist work, I can only and personally attribute it to erroneous. Since I cannot, without any doubt, retract back to any other understanding that isn’t preterist centered, I must confirm my view as to be one that is imbedded within the historical church, as stated by the Apostolic and pre Nicene fathers in a post 70 AD world. It is their understanding of the Biblical texts that deserve much attention, as their proximity to the era that ended in 70 CE to be of utmost importance. Therefore, I have taken a Covenant centered preterism as represented by the apostolic and historic church of Christianity. Furthermore, I have also decided to join the Roman Catholic Church based on their preteristic principles that have been laid out over the last 2 millennia. In the next coming months, I will be baptized and confirmed a Roman Catholic, most likely under St. Luke. Thanks for reading and blessings to you all.” http://covenantpreterism.ning.com/profiles/blogs/a-new-position One doesn’t know whether to take this as a ploy to prove a point or not. See, while ...
